[Well all of that doll nonsense was, you know. Fun.

(It was not)

But it's over now, so moving on! Out of sight, out of mind!

Oona appears on the network, around 10 books scattered around her. From the looks of the covers, they're all very trashy ridiculous romance novels. Oona sits on the floor in the middle of them, one in her hand and opened somewhere in the middle, but her expression is a bit disappointed and exasperated
]

Human books are so strange! Like stories and such-- really like romance. There is so many! But so weird. Want to read romance, but keep talking about gardens!

[Wait what.

She looks disappointedly at the book again and sighs deeply.
] Where did she get flowers from, so sudden? Why is he stroking 'quivering flower petals'? [UH] Or rubbing buds? [oona wait--]

And! Man keeps suddenly having hard swords? They stab, but girls like? So weird! Is all such nonsense! [ooNA NO.

She tosses the book none-too-gently over her shoulder and rests her elbow on her knee, chin in hand, pouting.
]

Tell me better stories.

Some people write so because in some places, sex is considered a shameful activity, and it is inappropriate to discuss or describe it overtly other than in very private settings. Or very specific ones. Sometimes, it is done so to shield the attention of children from more than they ought to know - a book might end up in the hands of many.

For others, finding the most interesting way to describe it is considered a challenge, though that is more often in poetry than prose.

[It takes him a moment she means him, he's not sure what to do about that nick name, he's never had one before and it gives him pause. But not for long as he does respond fairly quickly.]

I had assumed everything here just naturally translated, but maybe there are limits.

Oh! If reading is a bit hard but you still want to enjoy printed stories, perhaps romance manga would be a good idea? You don't get silly euphemisms, but you might get some silly illustrations.

Well, it is supposed to be poetic and evocative... at least when it is done well. The idea is to stimulate the imagination by only suggesting and giving images.

As I said, when done well, it can be powerful and extremely erotic. However...

[He very much doubts those are the works of great poets. He caught a glimpse of the cover of the book while she was flipping through it.]

Those are probably not the best example of it to be honest, but that is not their purpose. They are mean to be titillating.

[It's just as well that he's still using voice because his expression sure does some funny things here.

There's his usual brand of attentive listening (which still looks vaguely irritated), and then a confused frown, because...all right. A sword could be warm if it were magic...though why mention that it's hard? Isn't that rather redundant? But then...why was she guiding the sword towards her and why would she be crying out in pleasure from it--]

[And that was about the point where his expression went from thoughtful to red-faced surprise as he understood exactly what she's reading.

Then he glared.]

Throw that out.

[Or set it on fire. Either works.]

Totally different. Their pictures but they are done to convey action and story, they're sequential. The only written part are sound effects and speech bubbles. They're for all sorts of ages, adult and children. They can be easier to read and I know there are people who use it to practice.

In fact there are even educational manga. So it's worth looking into.

No, there aren't actual flowers involved. It's.....a comparison. Comparing parts of the body with objects that may hold a similar shape or appearance.

[He refuses to say any more than that! Does he even know any more than that? It's not like he has any actual (s)experience himself, despite all those brothel visits.

Excuse him as he moves to cover his face with his fan...]
I don't usually read romance stories, but the ones I've heard all tended to be similar in effect - hiding the less appropriate scenes behind flowery words, to make it sound prettier than it is.

It's filth.

[oh no. wei wuxian then tries to switch modes - it takes a bit, but he manages it.

even though the video is kind of looking up his nose a little.
]

I meant to say that in romance novels, flowers are often used to describe a woman's maidenhood, and swords a man's, er, manhood, as it were.

Did your book come with pictures?

[There's a Lot he could comment on this. Like where to even begin? But the young man on the screen looks pretty amused, as he rest his head on his palm.]

Well... yeah, humans can be pretty strange. So it's not weird for them to write just as strange stories.
