I have one about twelve inches and it's seen me through some rough fights. You can go a little bigger or smaller. Sometimes smaller -- not too small -- is better. Easier to work with speed over strength (or speed and strength). Bigger ones like kukri aren't as fast.
The beach or forest seems to work. And they are. They can pierce flesh much easier and if you want something that pierces armor/bone/things more rough I'd suggest an assault rifle. They're more cumbersome for first-timers, but I have an array at my disposal I'd be happy to let you try.
