Oh. Hey there.

[ the voice that drifts through the communicators defies description. it is venus's voice, and it is not; like a young tenor, barrel-aged since the beginning of time and only just coming into its own. it sounds like fresh hookah and tastes like music. it's like static and honey, gently sifting out of electronic speakers. ]

This place... [ a sigh. ] It's beautiful, isn't it? A thousand thousands, living their own truths. It's flawed, and uncut, and cracked down the edges. It's the most beautiful, wonderful gem I've seen.

[ for a few seconds, the recording stays silent. all that remains is the background noise of lunatia: voices trickling up from the streets. the whirr of machinery and the hum of crystals. ]

There are hundreds of you, and I know so few. [ there's something ancient in her words. deep, old, sad. ] So while there's still time... Tell me. Remind me of your name. Let me see your face so I never forget it again.

[ an exhale, long and smooth. ]

And if you're hurting, or lonely, or you've forgotten too... Find me. I'm waiting. I'll always wait for you.

[ there's a soft laugh, barely audible - a fond exhalation more than anything voiced. ]

Until then, my darling.

[ the recording clicks off. ]

[Grimm's face is a hard one to forget.]

Hello, Venus. Or should I call you something else at the moment?

[She isn't not Venus. Just as the Nightmare King isn't not Grimm.]

Hello, Grimm.

[ for grimm, the video is switched on - a courtesy for a courtesy. and sure enough, that's venus - if a venus far, far past her awkward teen years. her hair reaches well past her shoulders; what once were two wings have become six, magnificent and extending beyond the frame.

she smiles, reaching forward to run a finger down grimm's reflection on the device, and speaks again. ]

Would you prefer to? [ it's an honest question. titles, epithets, names - all are things she's gone by, long ago. ]

[Venus has blossomed beautifully. If this is what awaits her when the passage of time rights itself again, Grimm is glad for it.]

Venus is a lovely name. It suits you, I feel.

I agree. So I'll stay Venus.

[ there's a fondness in her voice, something almost different than the sad love from earlier. it's not romantic, exactly? it's friend rather than child. it's the acknowledgment of one celestial being to another. ]

Are you and your child still safe?

We are. They quite enjoyed their time with you in the museum.

And you, my friend?

[Friends and equals on the celestial stage.]

Did they? [ a quirk of the lips, a soft laugh. she covers her mouth with her wrist, smiling all the while. ] I think... I enjoyed it too. Yes, I'm certain of it.

[ the hand drops down. her gaze casts off to the distance. ]

It has been... a long time, for me. So, so long. So many people to watch for. So many faces I've known since they were first sculpted. [ there is a note of excitement there - an almost impish delight, a bit of who she once was shining through. ] And coming back here, and knowing so few of them! I want to see all of them. I want to learn their names.

Venus?

[That is Venus, he's certain of it, but they sound... odd.

But, Danny switches from audio to video on his end after a moment, because Venus is someone he is comfortable speaking with through such means rather than the careful planning and anonymity of text.]

I'm not hurting or lonely [he lies, like a liar] but if you'd like some company at the moment, I wouldn't mind offering it.

Danny.

[ her voice is peaceful, like a warm room after sunset. like sitting by a fireplace with the first boy you thought you loved. and still there is a hesitation, a slow moment of doubt where she doesn't show her face.

and then, finally, she flips on the video.

she is venus and she is not. six wings grow from her where there were once two, each many-eyed and resplendent. her hair continues past her shoulders, long and untamed. and while the wings wrapped around her give her some degree of modesty, she seems to have shed her clothing altogether. her skin is vibrant from toe to tip, pearly white and luminous.

if lucifer truly was a fallen one, she looks every bit the devil she claims to be. ]

I want to see you... as long as you would still see me.

It seems you and I have travelled in opposite directions. I spent a fair bit of time the other day as the same size and age as my child.

[Two tiny bugs playing tag.]

[Danny is momentarily silent in shock upon seeing how different she looks in comparison to how he normally sees her in this place... but, he's smiling again soon enough.]

Of course. I'm always happy to see you Venus, no matter what form you have.

...thank you, Danny.

[ she doesn't sound surprised, exactly - just happy to hear it. a soft, warm smile spreads across her face, and after a moment she reaches forward, running one finger down the recording face of the communicator. ]

I am still here. In the place where... I used to live. Where I live now. Will you come find me?

Of course.

[He's already standing up from where he had been sitting before.]

I can be there in about fifteen minutes, give or take. Is that alright?

[The voice isn't one Akira recognises, but he's intrigued. Whoever it belongs to can't possibly be human, he thinks.]

Are you lonely?

[ a name she doesn't know. a voice she hasn't heard. she wants to hear more - his name, his hopes, his fears. but more than that, she wants... ]

Of course. How could I not be?

[ she's not one to hide from those who seek her. so she reaches forward, and she flicks the video feed on, and just like that any doubt is gone. six feathered wings spread from her back, a hundred eyes watching from within the feathers. her skin is luminescent, white radiating off every exposed inch of her body. she is, in every sense of the word, radiant.

she reaches out, gently drawing her finger across the communicator's screen. ]

Are you, too?

As long as it takes to see you.

[ the video ends, just like that. her door will be unlocked when danny comes by - slightly ajar, even. ]

[It's very strange, how the voice reminds him of the 'young master' who threw a parasite in his eye. It's weirdly calming and yet puts him on the edge. After all, he did refuse to become his champion, in the end as he wanted.

Maybe he's just being paranoid?]

Who are you?

[She's beautiful. That's his initial thought as the feed turns on, and for a moment he wonders if an angel (or something very much like one) should really be talking to someone like him.

But she's asking him a question, so he'll stop gawking long enough to answer.]

...Yeah, maybe. [He can't lie, not to an apparently celestial being. With so many eyes she'd see right through it anyway, he supposes.] There are people I miss.

[ if she notices his stare, she doesn't call him out on it. she just nods, a soft frown marring her face. ]

I understand, [ she says, and her voice is soft as silk. ] And... do you want to return to them? Would you bring them here, if you could?

[ his voice... whoever this young man is, he is guarded, tense. and yet he is not one of god's chosen - not with those fearsome markings.

whoever he might be, she isn't rude - if he is willing to show himself, she will return the courtesy. the video feed flicks on to reveal someone otherworldly - so white she is glowing, luminescent from every inch of exposed skin. six wings extend from her back, one wrapping around to cover her nude form, and from within the feathers hundreds of eyes watch the feed curiously. ]

I have had many names. [ it might have come across evasive, from another voice. as is, it's a statement of fact - nothing more. ] Once, in this place, people called me Venus. Long before that, Satan. And yet before that, Nachash. Call me whatever you'd like.

Um, Venus-han? Are you alright?

[ That is Venus, right? There something awe-inspiring, sad, and frighteningly powerful in her presence. She got the same chills from the brief appearance of the Lifemaker. ]

Oh, Konoka... I've missed you, darling.

[ there is something inhuman in her voice. not cruel, or cold, or anything like that - simply something beyond humanity. still, the soft giggle (like honey that could melt ice with its heat) is at least a little familiar. ]

I... don't think I'll be making it to work today. [ was she scheduled, on this day, so long ago...? yes, she believes she was. ] I have so little time, and there are so many people to see...

[ for the first time since her post, the devil laughs - high, pleased and clear. there isn't a trace of malice in her voice or face; delight tinges every crevasse. ]

How wonderful! Oh, I wish I'd been here to see you. [ the laugh eases into a smile, and the smile eases into something softer. fondness, maybe, or admiration. ] A father who sounds nothing like a god, playing with his child as an equal. Doesn't that sound magical?

Uhh...?

[ There's so much to unpack here... Konoka figures she might just have to dump the whole suitcase open. She was missed? This voice was way too strong to be just Venus. ]

Okay...?

[ And apparently, to be called "The Adversary" seemed contrary to the usual handle she'd seen Venus with. What was going on? ]

[ a small, fond chuckle - barely picked up by the microphone, more of a smile than a laugh, but fond nonetheless. ]

You have questions. [ it's an observation of fact. ] I'm here as long as you want to ask.

Uh, where do I even start?

[ Venus could probably imagine the blank smile on Konoka's face that shows up when she's confused. ]

I might have to say... who are you now?
