You couldn't text someone from a telephone in the 1960s though. The best you had was a telegraph and that was still nothing like this.

Mass psychogenic illness, or mass hysteria, is the rapid spread of symptoms among a group of people for which there is no somatic cause. Basically, a whole bunch of people are acting strangely but there's no bacteria or virus or other agent causing it.
