and a friend went from

Because either you're going to mess up your makeup with sweat or you're not wearing makeup. your face is going to look all wrong.

But in an - admittedly very unsanitary - heart-based gym you'd at least be covered in blood also. Which would make the messed up makeup more of a look in itself.
