People came to priests if they had sinned, and would ask for absolution in the eyes of God. Although it was technically a thing of penance and performance to cleanse yourself, I think that there's equal benefit, if not greater, in the therapeutic side of it.
To confess to someone acting as the ears of something greater. To talk about something bothering you to someone who won't share it. And I'm sure if I did share anything confessed, I'd be as good as ly-- I'd find myself in strife.
