[ the phrases "in the family way" and "with child" symbolically float around his head as he performs mental arithmetic.
"in the family way" = "in the family['s] way"?
"with child" = "[along] with [a] child"?
"once I'm in the family way / with child" = "once I begin to thwart a certain family with the help of a child I know"???
... ]
Well...
...
But is that really the best idea?
...I suppose much depends on the family, and of course on the child...
