Well, okay, his purpose for being here is not a dumb one. It is food related, though, which seems to fall second only to pet posts and questions of a sexual nature.

Hey everyone. So uh. My birthday is comin' up!

[He tries to smile, but it comes out rather hollow looking and fades after a second. He rests his chin on his hand with a sigh.]

I know I haven't been the most uh-- ... I mean. I don't know many people here still, so if anyone is like "who cares, it's some random punk's birthday" I totally get that. But uh, I figure I can at least offer somethin'?

Is it weird to do that even though it's my birthday? Eh...

I-it's... my birthday, I mean, it's two days after Christmas. That's the big winter holiday where I'm from. I was talkin' to someone else a while ago about how there's no KFC here, and that's where people in my country usually get their Christmas dinner from. It's a whole weird tradition...

[That's besides the point, though.]

Anywaaaaay, I can't make fried chicken exactly like KFC but I've tried a coupl'a times in the past week and gotten it super close, so I wanna try makin' a whole bunch for anyone who really misses it, or really wants to try it. I figure we could meet up at the community center for a... a potluck thing? If... anyone is even interested...

[Potlucks also seem to be somewhat popular here. He might be piggybacking off of too many of them, and he's all awkward and anxiety about doing this at all. He hasn't looked directly at the camera much during this, fiddling with his ear, his shirt, his hair.]

Or maybe just show up, eat all the chicken and bounce. I can't even really be mad if that happens...

Well, not everyone has their birthday that close to a holiday...

Decorate trees, put lights up, give gifts and have big dinners with your family. Y'know, if you have one. There's a buncha religious shit that goes along with it, too, but I haven't paid attention to that in years.

Yeah, that's it. I'unno the history behind that one, though. I got Christmas kinda beaten into my head when I was growin' up.

Neither do I. This will be my first time celebrating it here.

Is it an important holiday where you're from?

To some people. There's a lotta religions in my world, and not all of them recognize Christmas.

Noooooot as much as you'd think? I mean, like, I don't think everythin' in at least the Catholic bible is completely true, but demons are a real thing at least in my world.

My world doesn't have anything Catholic and I think I've seen the word bible in a library before. Demons are kind of a thing where I'm from, but it's more accurate to just call them... darkness.

There's a lot I'm not familiar with either. I know mostly Catholic, but then there's Christian, Baptist, Jewish, Buddhist, Shinto... and that's not even close to all of them.

['Darkness' makes him frown.]

Demons are... a lot more complicated than just dark and light.

It sounds like a headache trying to keep track of all of them.

Don't misunderstand me, I don't mean that darkness is bad it just- is. It's something almost everyone has in their hearts, but sometimes when it becomes too much it takes on forms of its own. Light is similar. They are their own forces.

At least in my world it's like this. Someone I care about very much was created from darkness, but he's more than that. Considering his origins some might consider him a demon, but I wouldn't.

I know someone who had scriptures from both the Bible and Buddhist mantras memorized. I can't even get a score above 75 on my homework...

Oh. Okay, that... makes more sense.

Demons just... are. Some are jerks, some are evil, but most just exist, y'know? They're in a world that's like a mirror to Assiah, but they cross over and possess things and people and cause problems sometimes but there are ones that have been guardians or helpers, too.

Oh, you went to school for religion? That's pretty cool! I think...

Where I'm from there are as many worlds as there are stars in the sky, but all of the darkness came from one place. It's always been such a... weird and mysterious force and I was taught to see it as something inherently evil.

I guess things like light and dark being complicated are issues across all kinds of worlds.

I went to school for-- well, the academy was a regular school, I just also went to a cram school for exorcist.

[An actual religious school would probably make Rin explode.

Rin doesn't know what "inherently" means, but he can take a pretty good guess given the worst after it.]

I'm not surprised. Hell, life is complicated...

It is, especially for those who deserve better. I know I shouldn't say it but... living here has actually been very peaceful for me. The person I care about the most is here with me and knowing he's happy makes me happy too.

I have someone I care about a lot here, too, so I totally get that. We wouldn't be able to be together otherwise.
