[Sometime mid-morning of the first, Ace decides to actually celebrate his birthday this year. It really hits him again that he cheated death through coming to this world. He'd never see twenty-one back home, but here? He got the chance to. And it keeps weighing on him that it'd be stupid to not have a good time and enjoy it.

He figures he can pass it off as being really thrilled about the new year if nothing else. And to be fair, he's pretty excited about that too.]

it's kind of a big day for me. So i want to get a tattoo done to celebrate. can anyone do one for me? back home I'd have a crewmate help out or go to shore but i don't know where to get one now.

[Another private message is sent after that to Ace's friends and family.] it's my birthday! i'm twenty one today, so i wanna treat all of you to food and drinks when we can get a group together. i want to live every day without regrets, and that means living it to the fullest with the people I care about.

that one's for my mom. I don't know her, but I owe her everything. I don't know what she looked like either, but my gramps said she wore that kind of flower in her hair so I figured it was a good choice.

[ She can both relate to owing someone everything and be jealous at the same time because her parents abandoned her and no one loved her for most of her life, right? Right. But she also understands owing someone everything because that's how she feels about Cinder. (If.. a little deludedly so in her case, but she certainly isn't aware of that.)

She can remember a time when she would've just hated someone for talking like this, would've made fun of him behind his back. She's found people who care about her though, now that she's been away from Remnant for a couple of years. She's not as quick to jump to hating people for their happiness as she used to be, because she finally has some of her own. ]

You have a lot of people who care about you huh?

[Ace has no clue about if his genetic father wanted him or not, the man was executed before Ace was even born. And his mother died soon after giving birth, after carrying him for a horrific twenty months. He does owe her everything, without her act of will he wouldn't have lived at all. But Ace has never seen her face, and he's only seen his father through illustrations and wanted posters speaking of his villainy and piracy. His parents didn't abandon him, but he still never got to know them. And he wouldn't understand why anyone would ever be jealous of him, He was a hated, unwanted child. Born with filthy blood, told from early childhood that he should die, just for existing.

There's nothing to ever be jealous of. And for the longest time, Ace didn't really care if he lived or not. But he found his own family in his sworn brothers and through piracy, and honors his past as best he can.]

Yeah. I don't know why, but I really did have great people in my life who loved me. so if I can put them on my skin, it's a way I can hold their intentions with me forever.

[ Emerald doesn't know any of that. If she did, she would relate more than envy. After all, she's a street rat with no one. Not until maybe a couple years ago, when a woman who wanted to use her found her and convinced her that she cared. She taught her things, gave her a home and a purpose, a partner- the first person she could call a friend. Maybe what she asked for in return resulted in mass murder, yeah, but Emerald would've died starving in a gutter somewhere if she hadn't gone with Cinder that day, no one but her own fleas to mourn her. She has to believe that Cinder cares for her no matter what anyone else says. She had to, anyway. She's still holding onto that no matter how many cracks have started to form in that belief between being here, learning what it's like to have people who actually care for her, and her own partner saying otherwise. As far as she knows, Ace is lucky. He doesn't have to question that.

She likes the idea of having those people who care for you on your skin forever though. She wonders what they would think if she suggested it.. ]

That's kind of cool. Now I want one...

[They were both lost and struggling children. But this place is good for both of them. Ace got a second chance at life here, and Emerald has opportunities to have people here who care about her. They've both got a lot of healing to do, but despite the oddities of this world it's full of opportunities for that.

And Ace is more than pleased at the idea of spreading his tattoo habit to someone else. It's something that he thrills in, the ability to put someone on him forever speaks volumes about devotion to Ace. And tattoos are beautiful too, something that colors the skin forever. So Ace will encourage the hell out of this.]

You should get one! what would you get, if you did?

[ She doesn't really know. She'd definitely have to think about it. ]

Maybe a shogi piece with cat ears?

[ That sounds like it might be dumb. She really isn't sure though.. ]

[Ace is so amused at the mental image this presents. He's seeing it more of a shogi-piece cat, though. Eyes and tail and feet and all.]

That sounds great. is it something important to you, or is it just something fun?

The two people who care about me like shogi and cutesy anime stuff like cat ears.
So kind of like yours- it'd be for those people.
I need to think about it probably..

so you can honor them both in one tattoo. That's great! And there's nothing wrong with thinking about it first. it's pretty permanent, so you gotta make sure that you really want one.
