A joke usually has to be told in person and involves some participation from the audience, right?

Yes, kind of? A humorous drawing that gets shared a lot and can be used in a lot of ways.
Sometimes they can just be images that express a very specific emotion that other people find so relatable that no discussion needs to be had about the meaning...
