How can you tell if someone's resolve to be different than they were in the past is true?

And how do you stop thinking about someone who ruined your life.

It's a miracle, yes, but not a miracle cure for all society. The divine doesn't absolve people from the need to take responsibility for themselves.

Surely you can understand how reducing the amount of effort that goes into crimefighting and wars would grant resources towards the solving of other social issues?

The divine only cares for its own views, not that of those who face the consequences of its actions.

Have the policemen in your world become doctors? Have those who only know how to fight been able to find life without battle?

Has that change happened, in your world?

Soldiers have returned home to their families and found different employment. Police have stopped being vastly overworked and can direct their resources towards more common matters previously ignored.

It's a process. We were only five years into that process.

Do you presume personal experience with the divine?

I have fought against the will of God in my world, as that will would have seen the destruction of all living beings with in it.

The divine of other worlds I have met held no better understanding of the mortals they toyed with, or the other worlds they nearly tore apart in their desire for their own gain.

Those are not Gods like the God of my world. Selfish supernatural creatures aren't the same as the divine justice. Not all that claims to be a God actually is such.

[ It's nice to have this conversation over text where he can just state things with absolute certainty, when in reality not all about his faith is quite as clear to him anymore. It's unsettling. ]

I know for a fact that the God that I fought was the same one who set into motion the order of our world. And I have met the gods that oversaw another world, and know for truth that they were who they were.

Many who deal in punishment talk of justice. They decide that they are worthy to judge and execute judgement. But any force, mortal or otherwise, that takes justice into their own hands, is only using justice as an excuse.

Justice is not an excuse. Justice is a measurable value and people are merely making excuses to evade it, justify their own horrid actions. Punishment would not be necessary in a society where people have internalized and understood righteousness.

When all the data points the same direction, that is the closest to proof one can get.


Punishment does not teach people what is right and what is wrong.

True justice does not punish. True justice does not destroy. Those who do so in the name of justice are not righteous, be they god or man.

You seem very adamant about calling the foundations of any legal system into question.

The foundation of a legal system is rehabilitation. Not punishment.

That is very dependent on the severity of the crime. The capital punishment has endured for a reason.

No one deserves to be put to death.

Regardless of what crimes they've committed.

There is no world in which causing more death reverses loss of life.

And yet it provides closure and safety; a guarantee that nobody else will ever suffer by the hands of this person again.

I'd like to think it does. It did, for me.

It's been 15 years.

I saw to it personally that the one who killed here could never kill again.

It didn't help.

Revenge has never helped the way I felt it should. I only felt hollow afterwards. The wound never healed, regardless of whatever price was paid.

I'm going to try and teach him instead. What it's like to be human. How it feels. And why human life has value.

Maybe then, the future can be different.

It's not revenge. Revenge is a petty, punishment is just.

Either way, don't be too surprised when your efforts go nowhere. I see I cannot talk you out of them.
