[ When the video cuts on, it's to the face of a smiling young woman in a soft pink dress in front of a backdrop of a wall of glowing crystals. She's glowing, too, or at least the little markings under her eyes are. A small family of pastel mice sit perched on her shoulders, two to a side, but apart from that quirk she looks very prim, even dainty. ]

Good evening, Lunatia. I hope this message finds you well. Now that the dragonsong has finallyabated, it seems the perfect time to introduce myself.

[ Since everyone isn't going crazy with lust for the moment, that she knows of. She's new, okay? Give her a month. ]

I am Princess Allura of the planet Altea, a Paladin of Voltron, and one of the founding members of the Voltron Coalition. Perhaps these things don't hold any meaning in a reality where Voltron--and maybe even Altea itself--never existed, but I imagine many here find themselves in a similar position.

[ The smallest mouse on her shoulder squeaks, distracting Allura long enough to pass her a tiny piece of fruit with a light chuckle. ]

At any rate, I am newly arrived here in Lunatia, and since it seems there's no telling if or when I'll be returned to my own reality, I hope to become better acquainted with this place and my fellow Moonblessed. What are some of the things you most enjoy about this world? What places would you recommend visiting?

Also, if anyone would be willing, I’d be thrilled to have a few sparring partners to help keep my skills sharp. Please let me know if you’re interested!

They actually make pretty good coffee around here, if it helps. And Crystal Beach is nice. They got one of those swim-up bar things at the resort there, too, which is a plus.

[ She smiles pleasantly. ]

Coffee! I've heard the Paladins mention it as a beverage from Earth, but I've never had the pleasure of sampling it myself. Everything you mentioned sounds fascinating.

As for the mice, they aren't actually mine, as such. We're friends. They take care of themselves, mostly. [ Even though she does leave food out for them, and run little baths for them, they're their own mice. ]

Oh, thank god. Allura it is, then. I'm Rochelle.

Damn. Aren't you a regular Cinderella? [She grins, in case it's not obvious she's teasing.] So you said you're from a place called... Altea, right? Do they really not have coffee there?

It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Rochelle, and I hope you'll forgive me but I'm not sure what a Cinderella is. Perhaps you might be so kind as to enlighten me?

Altea was my planet, yes. Coffee, however, is native to the planet Earth. From the descriptions my friends have provided, it's safe to say that we have similar energizing beverages, but none of them would have the same flavor or chemical composition.

Oh - sorry. Cinderella's a princess story back on Earth. Someone made a kids movie out of it, and she had talking mice friends.

Okay, I was gonna say. I'd feel sorry for you if energizing beverages WEREN'T a thing where you're from.

[ Allura seems to perk up at the idea of another princess with talking mice. ]

Would you tell me more of this Cinderella? I'm afraid I know very little of Earth's culture or folklore outside of what my friends have told me.

Oh, we had many such beverages on Altea. Kalika juice was my personal favorite--a sweet and very tart flavor.

[Ro blinks - then laughs.]

Sure. I guess I'll tell you the kids movie version since that's the one most Earth people know. [God, that's a strange sentence to say out loud.] So. There's a girl named Cinderella, who basically becomes a maid in her own home after her dad dies. Her stepmother and stepsisters are horrible shitheads to her and make her do all the cleaning, cooking, et cetera.

Meanwhile, at the royal palace, the king puts a ball together to find a wife for the prince, and invites every eligible woman to come. Like... EVERY woman. Somehow. [She grins wryly at that. Hell of a way to meet someone, but she'll refrain from TOO much of her own commentary yet.] The stepmother tells Cinderella can go if she finishes the chores and finds a dress, but gives her a huge heap of chores chores that day. So her animal friends - mice included, make a dress for her.

[Not the whole story yet, but she'll start with that and see if Allura's interested in the rest.]

There's usually animal sidekicks in these movies, for the record.

I see! It sounds like a quite a whimsical tale. I have been to many balls in my time, but none of them for the express intent of matchmaking. My father made it clear that I would be able to choose my consort when the time came, but one must always bear in mind advantageous political alliances.

[ And that's probably more than Ro wanted to know, sorry. Allura clears her throat sheepishly. ]

I'm... not sure if the mice could sew, actually. Perhaps I'll have to purchase supplies and see what they come up with. They like to help me with my hair on occasion.

... right. [Look, she wouldn't know. She can't judge.] Your dad's a lot smarter than this guy, I guess.

I think they had a lot of help. [She chuckles.] Anyway. The step-sisters tear up her dress, and she runs off into the garden in tears... which is when she meets her fairy godmother.

Fairy... godmother? [ Yeah, you lost her. ]

A godmother.

But magic.

[Ro quirks a brow. Yeah, she knows it's weird. Weirder than mice making dresses.]

Ah, see, I understand the concept of magic, but I've never heard of a 'god mother' before.

I guess by a more... modern definition? Godparents are like, people chosen by a baby’s parents to mentor or look after them if something happens to the parents. Here, though, it’s mainly for magic bullshit reasons.

So Cinderella’s godmother magics her ripped dress into a ballgown with glass slippers. She also turns a pumpkin into a stagecoach, and the mice into horses. Then she sends Cinderella off to the ball - with one stipulation. The spell breaks at midnight.

Oh, then I suppose I have one of those as well, though it's more... self-appointed than anything, I believe. Our family's royal advisor, Coran, has taken it upon himself to look after me after... the war began.

[ Her whole family is dead, is what she's saying. But back to the story!! ]

So this fairy godmother gives her the means to go to the ball, but only for a brief time. Her magic isn't very powerful, it seems. What happens at midnight?

Oh... sorry. I know what you mean.

[Sort of. Zombie apocalypses aren't exactly wars, but...

Anyway. She shakes her head.]

Guess not. [She laughs quietly.] Long story short, she meets the prince at the ball and they hit it off. Come midnight, though, she realizes the time and takes off. I think she gets out of sight before everything starts changing back the way it was.

Thing is, she leaves one of those glass slippers behind. The prince liked her so much, he makes a thing out of searching the kingdom for anyone who fits the slipper. Kind of impractical, if she was a size... what, six? But you know. Fairy tales.

I'm sorry, too, and for your loss as well.

[ But that's not something anyone wants to dwell on, is it? They're dead and that's that.

Allura looks confused again as Ro continues on with the story, tilting her head slightly. ]

Wait. He searched the kingdom for this young woman, only taking the size of her feet into consideration? Were face coverings traditional in this story's setting? Would he not have recognized her when he laid eyes on her?

[Zombie apocalypses aren’t the most uplifting thing to include in a fairy tale synopsis.

See, that’s the problem! He saw her face and everything! And the step-sister STILL tried on the goddamn slipper.

I'd be rather... concerned about entering into a relationship with someone who couldn't recognize me on sight after spending multiple hours in my company. Especially if their solution was to attempt to locate me using footwear.

[ SIGH. ]

At any rate, was the prince's search successful? Did he manage to find Cinderella?

I mean. At least he'd know you have good taste in shoes?

[Ro grins.]

Yep. Shoe fit, they got married and lived happily ever after.

What a strange tale. And this is a very well-known story? Is there a moral to it?

[ The ending seems a little anticlimactic, if you ask her. ]

Pretty much. And I guess the moral is... I dunno, be kind? Including to people that make a maid in your own house, apparently?

If it helps, I only called you Cinderella because of the mice.
