[ although the thought of reaching out via text had crossed his mind (exhausted as it is) more than once, Otonashi ultimately settles on video for the sake of consideration. if anyone had seen Ruca’s earlier message and still had lingering concern, seeing him functional and able to speak for himself should alleviate it.
he’s not quite fine given the tells of poor sleep etched into his face, but he’s not torn to pieces or missing, either. ]
Hey... I just thought showing my face would be the right thing to do after I wasn’t able to for... uh, however long. [ a pause before he continues: ] 3, 4 days? I’m... not your go-go person if you need someone keeping track of time.
[ death will do that to a person. what do days matter when they blur together in endless time? ]
With that great character flaw covered and out of the way... I’m Otonashi. Anyway, I wanted to pitch an idea to everyone for—something like a club? A support group? I haven’t been here very long, but I’m, ah, noticing a trend... [ of people with poor socialization, or who have issues making friends, or trusting people, or... hm. his point. ] ... and I think there’s a lot of strength in organized numbers. I know there are groups designed to protect, clinics, recreation, but I was thinking something a little more informal?
[ he has to workshop it a bit more, but the world certainly has enough space to accommodate wishes such as this. surely it’s feasible, and if it already exists? all the better. strength in numbers. ]
I’m going to leave this here... My roommate insisted I sleep with him, and he was pretty adamant on not taking ‘no’ for an ans— [ almost as if on cue, the sleepy, comfortable voice of Ruca cuts in for those who may be familiar, slurring Otonashi’s name. Otonashi, in turn, takes the opportunity to turn aside to yawn a little. ] —answer... Right, so, let me know what you think..? See you later, switching to text.
( so Otonashi is running on empty, getting back from a series of unfortunate events, and letting everyone know he’s fine following some choice, sleepy wording. chaos may ensue. responses may come from Otonashi or Ruca (
demonicbookworm), probably text but may swap depending! disclaimer: they are not, in fact, about to go to town on each other. )

[ there's a reason he's asking, promise. ]
oh - yeah. I've been dead for a while, all my friends were. that's what the school uniform was about - the one Ruca mentioned. "shinda sekai sensen" - afterlife battlefront.

I do. I trained as an FBI agent and worked with them for several years. Before I came here, I was a consultant with the NYPD.
[ The second part is even more curious. Was he a zombie? Is it impolite to ask someone if they're a zombie? ]
Were you on Earth or somewhere else?

I came here with a handgun from home from a few -
unorthodox operations? we’ll go with that. I kinda developed my own training setup out of necessity and it hasn’t come up a lot, but.
[ he had been forced to learn quite quickly that a person can never be too careful in a place like this.
it may or may not be impolite to ask, he (shockingly) has not gotten that question just yet. ]
oh, you mean before I died? yeah, I was from earth. not that I could give you too many specifics after the whole “amnesia routine,” but I think that answers the question?

What kind of tips are you looking for? Targeting accuracy?
So you all were dead but still living somewhere?

handling different types of weapons too, and more sophisticated techniques for de-escalating rather than running in and hoping for the best
[ there’s a story or two there, surely, but he isn’t sure if Malcolm necessarily wants to hear them (read them?), so he skips the details. ]
right. we were in an afterlife that seemed to hold people who had ... died with some kind of deep lingering regret, and missed out on their youth.

[ He'd be interested in the story behind that, but... not right now. ]
Interesting. That's the first time I've heard something like that, but I've heard a lot of wild stories since I've come here.

and that would have a lot more weight if it mattered how badly I got maimed for just running in and trying things, but it usually doesn’t. it never used to, anyway.
[ a teaser for quite a few gruesome tales that really shouldn’t have worked out and may not have resolved so easily if not for the “already dead” detail. ]
there’s really no reason to how people are chosen to come here, is there? it just happens at random?

[ Malcolm is the king of 'just running in and trying things'. He's also seen so many dead bodies that there's very little he finds gruesome or morbid anymore. ]
That's what I've come to believe. Granted, I haven't run any data, but so far there doesn't seem to be an obvious pattern.

[ even if they may end up having similar methods, even being able to share solidarity and have backing that no, he isn’t entirely alone in his thinking would be beneficial. ]
that’s kinda what I figured, too. just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something important. if I want to be able to help other people figure this out, I should know some of what’s going on myself, too.
but I guess sometimes it just is what it is. so I won’t have answers for everything.

[ he hasn’t had a lot of time to adjust and consider it as a fairly new arrival, and especially not after being swept away from the world for days. ]
