prismatica | CASE 001 ♞ [VIDEO]

( The feed flickers on to a young man sitting at a table in the apartments in all of his courtroom finery. While he very much looks as though he's done his best to make himself as presentable as possible, there's no disguising the bags under his eyes. This is very much a man who has not had very a good night's sleep in a long time. )

Good morning. For those who I've not met before, my name is Miles Edgeworth. I was a prosecuting attorney from Los Angeles, California, in the United States of America on the planet Earth.

( Truly, what has his life come to that he has to make that clarification! )

I have been reflecting on the events that have occurred since our arrival on this planet, particularly during the festival. ( The plants had been bizarre and all, but he hadn't overly involved himself with them, having found other people more suited to what he has decided to consider extreme weeding. )

While I understand that the natives of this world might be more accustomed to free intimate contact between strangers, I consider it downright criminal that our food and drink at the festival might have been laced with substances that affect our behaviour without our knowledge or consent. If anyone suspects they may have consumed some of the contaminated items, I would be most interested in talking with you further.

I found out that it was the chocolate fountain making me have those weird side effects when we met at the festival.

Except it is, but she's actually keeping a straight face and not even flushing at all. Purely professional because really...]

So it is as I suspected. They are trying to trick people into intimate contact.

( But who are 'they'? He is not yet certain. )

Or it's a part of their culture they don't think they need to explain to us because they're not used to visitors like us. Remember Occam's razor.

[One should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.]

( Fortunately they've met before, so Edgeworth is able to take it as the jest it is likely meant as instead of starting off on the defensive. )

I suspect many of us are from cultures that are not quite so free with casual contact. If we can provide enough examples, we can at least provide a proper case from our perspective.

( Even if he's not 100% sure who he's going to address it to yet. )

If there are to be more arrivals, the orientation could be greatly improved, I agree. ( And if there could be less wandering around on the moon, that would be even better! )

I'm willing to put together a compilation of people's testimonies of their experiences here, and present it to those who might be able to do something about it.

You believe we were brought here on purpose?

Indeed. After running into several other individuals who had consumed the chocolate ( and holding their hands... ), I suspected that to be the case. How are you feeling now?

If that is truly the case, then we will inform then that it requires explanation.

What is more believeable: a large amount of individuals magically finding their way to a new world at random or an organized effort? I do not believe in chance as great as this would need.

That's fair. It's only right if we're expected to adapt to their culture that they take parts of ours into consideration.

Are you planning to prosecute these occurrences as a crime?

[It's not a joke she would have been comfortable making if they hadn't met before, really.]

This is true. It does seem we can count our blessings that they aren't interested in influencing people toward anything more... intimate than kissing, but there's very much something to be said for us feeling truly able to take things at our own pace.

[She's a teenage girl who braves the Tokyo subway on a daily basis. She knows this could be a hell of a lot worse than it is.]

( Like most things in his life, Kiritsugu has come to accept the unreality of this world in stride. This was not to say he was incurious. He had his own concerns as well as questions with regard to the nature of this place, but in this moment, there was simply nothing he could do. As a result, settling into an assigned apartment with a man he knew little more than a stranger took almost no effort at all, and falling into a routine fell into place easily enough.

It helped, of course, that Edgeworth was proving himself to be quiet and reserved for a roommate. Not a demeanour unlike his own, so Kiritsugu could hardly complain.

It was his night to pick up dinner. Takeout, again, and dubiously Chinese in origin from the PrismaPlace. He'll be neatly arranging the takeout boxes on the table while he waits for Edgeworth to accompany him. )

[He seems very professional and to the point and Midna sort of likes that. Although he might be a little too serious and stiff for his own good.]

I'm sure you've been asked this before, but what's a prosecuting attorney?

[It never actually occurred to her that anything at the festival was laced with something. But then, the thought of doing such a thing has never been a consideration. It seems like a roundabout way to sway people.]

Precisely. ( He smiles, but on Edgeworth's face, it's more of a smirk. )

I, ah, I didn't. The letters came up and I panicked.

[ Is that embarrassing? Yes.

At this rate, he's hoping he'll come out on the other side of embarrassment and be immune for the rest of his life. His heart rate hasn't been the same since he's gotten here.

(To be fair, it hasn't been the same since the Blight). ]

I had a bit of the chocolate and fruit. It felt...warm? Afterwards. At the time, I thought it to be the crowd, but perhaps it's as you say.

[Ren kind of figured out that both the lipstick and fountain were doing mildly questionable things on the fly - the lipstick by observation, and the fountain because he went there after the lipstick - but he didn't really care that much. For now, though, he's looking innocent about it.]

Collate them and present them to an authority who is capable of adapting our experiences in our place to better suit us.

From what I've witnessed, the chocolate encouraged physical contact between individuals. Hand-holding, and similar sorts of behaviours. ( He'll at least refrain from asking the man if he'd held any hands. For now. )

And for what it's worth, my advice still stands. I forget, this must all be very new to you, isn't it?

( Well how can he stay mad at a genuine apology. )

What sort of world were you from? One without this sort of technology?

( That being said, it's still a bit advanced for even Edgeworth's liking, but at least he comes from a place where he could imagine such things being possible, someday. )

How do you know for certain that they are not? Perhaps this is their idea of introducing us slowly to their culture.

( Which means that someone has to speak to them about a more appropriate orientation. )
