CASE 001 ♞ [VIDEO]

( The feed flickers on to a young man sitting at a table in the apartments in all of his courtroom finery. While he very much looks as though he's done his best to make himself as presentable as possible, there's no disguising the bags under his eyes. This is very much a man who has not had very a good night's sleep in a long time. )

Good morning. For those who I've not met before, my name is Miles Edgeworth. I was a prosecuting attorney from Los Angeles, California, in the United States of America on the planet Earth.

( Truly, what has his life come to that he has to make that clarification! )

I have been reflecting on the events that have occurred since our arrival on this planet, particularly during the festival. ( The plants had been bizarre and all, but he hadn't overly involved himself with them, having found other people more suited to what he has decided to consider extreme weeding. )

While I understand that the natives of this world might be more accustomed to free intimate contact between strangers, I consider it downright criminal that our food and drink at the festival might have been laced with substances that affect our behaviour without our knowledge or consent. If anyone suspects they may have consumed some of the contaminated items, I would be most interested in talking with you further.

( Fortunately they've met before, so Edgeworth is able to take it as the jest it is likely meant as instead of starting off on the defensive. )

I suspect many of us are from cultures that are not quite so free with casual contact. If we can provide enough examples, we can at least provide a proper case from our perspective.

( Even if he's not 100% sure who he's going to address it to yet. )

This is true. It does seem we can count our blessings that they aren't interested in influencing people toward anything more... intimate than kissing, but there's very much something to be said for us feeling truly able to take things at our own pace.

[She's a teenage girl who braves the Tokyo subway on a daily basis. She knows this could be a hell of a lot worse than it is.]

How do you know for certain that they are not? Perhaps this is their idea of introducing us slowly to their culture.

( Which means that someone has to speak to them about a more appropriate orientation. )

The festival had all the trappings of established tradition. I find it unlikely they would have held back for our sake, if the celebrations typically included worse than we experienced - especially after that examination before they brought us down here. [Now that was invasive and disquieting, and very much something worth asking the Prismals to tone down.]

[bratworth]

( Ah, yes, the examinations. The less said about that experience, the better. At least, in Edgeworth's eyes, there was more possible justification for it. )

You are more optimistic than I am, in any case.

[Justification, perhaps, but did they really have to share the results so frankly?]

I suppose someone ought to be. Still, there's nothing wrong with asking for a better orientation process than what we got.

[bratworth]

I intend to do so. Are there any further requests you would like me to pass on?

Not at the moment. They were taken off guard by those vines just as much as we were, so I don't hold any portion of their response to the problem against them.

[bratworth]

No, it doesn't seem as the presence of the vines was their fault. Do you believe their response could have been handled differently, however?

Once they realised how serious the problem truly was they were quick to act, and they didn't leave us to fend for ourselves. I think they did as well as could be expected, given the completely unexpected problem.

[bratworth]

( He'd thought from what she'd said that she might be implying some sort of critique, but he doesn't disagree with her: the response to the vine incident was handled as well as it could've been. )
