It wasn't the Hollow Knight's place to correct people on what they thought. It couldn't (mustn't) think; Dave was entitled to do so. So if Grimm wasn't a strange bug to him, then Grimm simply wasn't a strange bug to him.

The Knight is a sibling to this vessel, and therefore also a vessel.
They have a personhood and they are to be celebrated for what they are.
This vessel has no person to speak of, and therefore cannot refer to itself with such language.
