Traps have limited effect on rats due to being notoriously neophobic and highly social animals. If you use an unfamiliar food as bait they won't touch it, if you use a familiar one it kills one rat and the rest now know to avoid it and live to procreate.

I gathered you might be dealing with a technology level where horses would be necessary as transport. Still absolutely a status symbol, but less so than in the context of having them when numerous other forms of faster, more reliable and more comfortable transport exists.

I don't have anything against them mind you, I used horses during a number of campaigns where the terrain was unsuitable for any other vehicle, but for most people in my world these days, using a horse is a skill no one really needs to learn.
