Sure, people can change. It's not easy and sometimes they might fall back on their decision, but it has happened.

Surely those who are definitely evil wouldn't even want to try, unless it was for greater evil cause.

I can definitely agree with keeping away from the fight and making sure those you care for are safe. It's better to do that than end up as one of the victims of the cause.
