Why?

There is no reason for them to waste any of their tears for someone who is going to far surpass them.

Even if it’s better for him to have gotten home safe, tears for people you care about aren’t wasted.

... well, unless you only cry, but. Everyone deserves to feel a bit sad if they miss someone.
