Well it's good that you are honest with your friend but what if he's already aware?

I suppose if you wanted to be nice about it you, ask him if he's changed his deodorant or cologne recently. At least by mentioning cologne or deodorant, you make it clear that while you've noticed a change, that you don't think his smell is a bad smell.
