Well, that was definitely an interesting way to start off our stay...

[ It's been a couple of days and everyone's hopefully had some time to process and recover, so now is probably as good a time as any to pose this question, get people's minds off of what all just happened. It's being shot from an apartment living room with a view of the city from a window in the background. ]

My name is Serah Farron, and I have a question for the other... moon blessed here. [ She says a bit unsure, no air-quotes, but they're implied. ]

If it's not too personal to ask, I'm curious what kind of backgrounds and worlds other people come from. Was it very different from this one, or is it sort of the same?

I used to be a time traveler, and I enjoy learning about history, besides. I'd appreciate any answers, thanks!

I'll start by saying wow? Time travel's a new one on me. But as you've clearly gotten responses related to that, I'll answer your question first and we can circle back.

My name's Kerra Holt, and I'm from a planet called Aquilaris. It's a water world, with a few medium sized land masses. I'm also a Jedi Knight, a sort of peacekeeper in my world.

Does your world have anything like a warrior monk? That might be the easiest way to contextualize it.

Exactly what I got. [ She laughs a little, shaking her head. In fact she can TASTE the sass. His reward is a poke to the nose. ]

Hmph, so now I'm the brains. Just remember that you said it, not me, mister.

Well it's not something most humans can do easily, but almost all vampires can rewrite constitutive formulas to do a wide variety of things. For example, you can rewrite the formula of gravity to allow yourself to walk upside-down on a ceiling.

[He hums.]

I see. I suppose it answers it enough.

Believe me, it's pretty uncommon on my world, too. [ Her smile is softly amused, but fair enough. She's definitely interested, hearing that Kerra comes from a mostly aquatic world. She has a ton of questions about that alone, but- ]

Nice to meet you, Kerra. I'm not sure, maybe? But not by those names, at least not for a very, very long time. We have Commandos and Sentinels, those are both physical jobs and front line fighters. Our peacekeepers used to be known as the Guardian Corps. My sister was one of them.

[ To which her smile almost falters, at least the look in her eyes does. It's a reminder that she hasn't seen Lightning in a long time and now that she's here, might not again for some time, if she ever does. But hey, this is a second chance at life and that's gotta be better than the alternative. ]

Would you mind explaining it a bit, though?

Vampires exist on your world? [ Now THAT is certainly interesting... ] That sounds amazing! To do something like that on our world you'd have to have special anti-grav technology, or you'd have to be inhumanly athletic. [ She only knows a handful of people who fit into that category. All of which were either l'cie, had access to the tech, both, were immortal guardians with the heart of a goddess, a SERVANT of said goddess, or some insane blend of all of the above.

He's welcome to ask more questions if he has them, of course, but she doesn't want to flood him with too much at once. ]

[She's been doing it a lot, lately, really so what's one more explanation? Plus she set herself up for this.]

The Jedi are a group of people, almost a religious order, almost a military force, that learn to manipulate the Force. The Force is a kind of energy that all living things give off, and we use it to do things people can't otherwise do. Jedi serve and protect, and operate outside of the Galactic Republic's military, moving from world to world to help those in need.

Hence the moniker, Knight.

I understand that you probably did not know about this rule. And, it is hard not to act when someone threatens your existence. I know about that all too well.

[No trouble today! Besides, it sounds like some Kai wasn't doing their job in her universe. They should have stopped whoever was destroying the timeline!]

Please, I ask of you to never do that again. The disruption you could cause would be unprecedented. The fate of entire civilizations can hinge on one act.

[Wow, excuse you. Just going to lift a hand to rub at his nose softly while staring straight at her.

I can see why they call you Meanie Miss Farron now.

Oh yes, they're fairly common. [It's amusing and interesting how many people seem so surprised by that. But then again, there was a point in human history where vampires would have been written off as fantasy in his world, too.]

So if you're used to things that can work against gravity then I'm guessing that your world's technology is more on-par with what's here?

[ Fish sighs. ]

It’s had its challenges, but so far it’s been a very interesting experience so far. My curiosity far outweighs my anxiety.

[ They chuckle. ]

The magic in my world is used for many things. I can’t really say it’s used for everyday living though. For example, anyone can study it, but only those smart enough or with a force of personality strong enough can really harness it effectively. And among those who can use it, not all become adventurers or fighters. Some become scholars or craftsmen, producing all kinds of magical artifacts.

I hope you don’t mind me asking what the Fal’cie are, since we don’t have those where I’m from... which must be a good thing, from what you’re saying. In any case... well, we generally don’t think of it as being magic, but we have what’s called bending, where you’re born with the ability to control one of the four elements. That seems like magic to some people here, anyway.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain. Thank you! [ She wants to come back to the part about multiple worlds, but since Kerra expressed interest in time travel, she'll keep her questions contained for now. ]

It sounds like the Jedi may be more similar to l'cie than any rank we used to have on either of our worlds. Being a l'cie was a lot more complicated, though, and it came with its own unique set of dangers. [ Only because you were operating on a time limit and basically had to keep your blood pressure down unless you wanted to turn into a friggin' monster. ]

Can anyone become a Jedi, or do they have to be born with or under certain conditions? People on Pulse or Cocoon could only use magic if they had a certain level of chaos in their hearts, for instance.

[ For a moment Serah's expression is lightly surprised, but then she goes suspiciously quiet.

And then he'll hear Noel in the background. ]

Yeah, we know. [Not only can he be heard, but he can also now be seen, leaning over Serah's shoulder to speak.] Sure would have been great if someone could have told us that before all of this.

[ After glancing at Noel Serah nods, seeming to find her voice again. ]

No one will be doing it again. Once we resolved the final time paradox the gates were all permanently sealed. And there's no one left with the means to open a time gate.

[ Though there's apparently the little matter of the world already getting fucked over, it was less to do with the time gates and more to do with being tricked into unleashing the Unseen Chaos into the world. ]

Noel is right, though, it's a little too late for that now.

Hey! How am I the meanie when you're the one that set yourself up?

[ This is why she loves learning about other worlds. There's so many details that can be so drastically different, but perfectly mundane to the people that come from them. Vampires? Complete fiction where she's from- at most. ]

I think so, at least it was before the Fall. The capital of the old world, Eden, is where all of that sort of technology was produced. I've seen video footage but I never visited. It didn't look all that different from parts of the city here. In my timeline, though, everyone is mostly starting over. There are still bits of technology from the old world but we left a lot of it behind when we moved to Pulse.

I understand what you mean, I think. I feel the same way. [ Though she came from a world with advanced technology, she, uh, also came from a time that didn't make any sense from a scientific stand point so definitely a case of curiosity outweighing possible distress. ]

Then it sounds like it's probably safe to say people use it for practical and every day things, too. That's all really interesting...! Magic in our world is really too... ah... volatile for that kind of use.

I don't mind at all. [ They can't hurt anybody anymore, so it's easier. ] Fal'cie were beings with godlike power. For a long time they controlled nearly every aspect of our lives. We always thought they looked out for us until we found out that they were actually using humanity for their own goals.

[ But, let's backtrack a bit. ]

They had the ability to turn people into what we called l'cie. It was like... becoming a Fal'cie's pawn. You'd be branded, and given a task, a Focus. If you failed to complete it you'd eventually turn into a monster... If you managed to defy it or see it through you'd be turned into crystal, but still conscious, in a way. Like an eternal dream.

[ It's all a bit heavy for a first time conversation, but there's no point in lying about it, either. ]

So... yes. Your world is better without them.

They were overthrown a couple of years in my past, and since then humanity has had to learn how to get by on their own. So in a way we've had to start over, with a little bit of leftover technology to help out. Too much depended on them.

[ But honestly she's more interested in the bending, but transitioning is a little tricky. She smiles a little sheepishly. ]

Sorry, it's a pretty complicated subject. But I'd love to hear more about bending, if you're up to talking about it?

I'm ask because, well. Besides it bein' so unusual, I'm an scientist. And quantum physicists ain't exactly figured time travel where I come from yet. I'd be lyin' if I wasn't pretty darn curious.

So. All that to say: how'd you do it?

[ So polite! Hey, she's a former teacher, she really doesn't mind at all. In fact she'd encourage the curiosity, if anything. ]

I hope you won't be too disappointed when I tell you there wasn't much, if any science involved. I'm sure that my friend, Hope, could probably have figured out a scientific explanation given enough time, but really the only way that it was possible for my friend and I was through the will of a goddess.

[ Which she suspects isn't going to be the answer that he wants to hear. ]

You have to be borne with an affinity for the Force. We call it Force Sensitivity. Anyone with the sensitivity can be trained as a Jedi, though there are other groups of Force Sensitives out there. Some good, like the Fallanassi or the Tyia, and others are more destructive. The Sith, the Shapers of Kro-Var, and others.

And since you'll probably ask...the Force isn't good or evil, but rather it has two sides. The Light and the Dark, and the Jedi are of the Light. The Sith are the primary organization working for the Dark and...well, I'll spare you commentary on their philosophy. You can probably work out my feelings.

I see, then there are a lot of different possible applications for the Force? It all sounds so fascinating...! We have something... I guess kind of similar, a power that everyone is born with, that's neither good nor bad. People born with higher concentrations of it are able to manipulate it into forms of magic and special abilities, but how they use it depends on the person.

Being someone who tried to fight for the greater good, yes. I think I can definitely take a guess at your feelings towards them.

I'm guessing that to become a Jedi Knight you must have quite a bit of experience. [ She smiles, as that's meant to be both observation and compliment. ]

[ Fish certainly seems to be quite the character. Serah can't help a quiet little giggle at the exaggerated gestures. ]

Really? We have music on my world, and magic, but no bards. That sounds incredible!
