So... just to relieve some boredom:
Has anyone ever had some kind of fictional "creature" turn out to be real for you? Vampires, yetis, ghosts, whatever. Something that was purely fiction for you until some point or another, or that Mulder and Scully would crap themselves over. How accurate are they to the stories, if so?
I'll go first. I know I talked about this already, but... zombies? Used to be a pure movie-and-video-game thing for me. Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later sort of shit. Then they turned out to be real. Mine aren't undead, but they DO mutate, which is kind of bullshit.
Zombie bullshit.
[that's zoey's line but ok rochelle]
"Aliens" is cheating, for the record, but only because we're all going through that right now.
And, uh... if you are a vampire, yeti, ghost, or whatever? That's cool too.
[slowly, she's accepting that these are Real Things she has to consider too]
I'll be real, I was just barely used to the zombie thing by the time I got here. But I'm getting used to the other stuff... a little.

[Beyond, like, the sci-fi shit they're already living in.]
I can't say how ours originated... besides people started getting sick in Philadelphia, got worse, and spread from there. It's technically only been two weeks, and most of the east coast is infected.
I remember there being a lot of conspiracy theories about stuff like that. Bio-weapons and shit. Most of it was literal writing on the wall, though.
no subject
[ Definitely no real-life similarities there... ]
Two weeks, though? That's an incredible infection rate, especially with the size of the United States. It was a month or so before just my city got beyond the point of no return. [ She sighs quietly. ] If I hadn't seen the proof with my own eyes, I'd still find those theories pretty likely. Things like this don't just happen. Not this fast.

[It was hard enough for Rochelle to wrap her head around the words "zombie apocalypse." "Bio-engineered virus" is a whole other realm of shit for her.
Partly, she just wants to stay in denial over some things.]
Well. Theories like that were usually next to graffiti like "Chicago Ted was here" and "I saw one poop a foot," so. Don't know how much water it holds.
no subject
[ Probably. ]
Can I ask what kind of mutations you encountered, Rochelle?
no subject
He'd probably get a kick out of finding out about aliens, though.
[She huffs a laugh, smile a little sad now. She misses said kid a lot.
Anyway.]
Mutations... honestly, there's a lot of them. We call them Special Infected. They changed into all kinds of things. Spitters, for starters. Long necks, messed-up faces, spit acid at us. Not pretty.
no subject
[ Not yet... ]
I came across something we called a Licker. They're blind mutations with huge claws and exposed brains that can crawl on the walls and ceilings. And a massive tongue. [ She makes a disgusted face. ] Not pretty either.
no subject
[Snrk.
Anyway.]
Eugh. Certainly DOESN'T sound pretty... almost sounds like a combination of Smokers and Hunters where I'm from.
[So with that, it might as well be her turn--]
Hunters have big claws too. They crawl and sneak around so they can pounce on people and tear them up. Smokers... SOMEHOW emit a lot of smoke, but they have massive tongues too. Use them to tongue-snipe folks and either pull them away, strangle them, or both.
no subject
[ It's aggravating. She's not a fan of not having answers. Rebecca drags her hand through her hair, trying not to get frustrated. ]
Smokers are new...and gross.
no subject
[Or Lickers, but that's a bad example. Something like that COULD exist in her own world, for all Rochelle new.]
They're pretty gross. Some of the worst ones were Tanks and Witches. Tanks are these gigantic things with... I guess you'd call it hypertrophy? Muscle on muscle on muscle. Big, pissed off, and WAY too strong. Like, pick-up-a-car-and-throw it strong. Fighting two at a time got REALLY bad.
Witches... well. They look and sound the most normal at a glance. They cry. And wander around with these... big claws. Worse than Hunter claws. If you leave her alone, she leaves you alone, but if you startle her...
[Her face twists uncomfortably.]
She usually doesn't stop 'til you're dead or she is. We had to go through a whole sugar mill full of 'em once, in the middle of a flood.

[ She had a generally good handle on what happened in the decade between her time and Jill's time. A lot of incidents, a lot of BOWs, and eventually the fall of the company which caused it all. But by that time, of course, it was too late...the research was out there, and there's always another company willing to risk it for profit. ]
They're across the whole of the United States, it sounds like? All these types?
no subject
[That answers that, if anything.]
East coast, so far. I don't know about the rest of the country yet.
no subject
[ It makes her think. She hums softly under her breath, propping her chin on a fist. ]
Does that mean New York's been hit for you? There's so many movies about it, but happening for real...I can hardly imagine it.
no subject
If I remember the map we saw from an evac route map... if was pretty close to a LOT of red X-es. "X" meaning "gone."
But I can also imagine a lot of pissed off New Yorkers with guns.
no subject
[ With how intense New Yorkers are about their city, she can't see them ever surrendering it until it's razed to the ground. And even then. ]
I'm glad you made it out of all that. It sounds like you've really been through a lot.
no subject
[That's a stereotype, Rochelle.
Anyway. The producer blinks a moment, then glances away. Her lips purse.]
Thanks. I honestly don't know if getting dropped on another planet was the answer, but. [That's a different story. She shakes her head.] Better than dying. I still got friends back home, though... the people I fought with. Nick's here, but... we're still hoping the other two show up.
no subject
[ There sure are a lot of topics that are too depressing to get into. That does bring one thought to her mind, which she hesitates before vocalising. ]
...what's with Nick, anyway?
no subject
Ah. Nick.
That motherfucker.
He's a topic unto himself.]
I take it you met him.
[There's a crinkle of apology in her expression.]
no subject
[ First, he was beating up a trashcan, bloodied and drunk. Second, he was making garbage plates for the internet. Not a great first, or second, or...any impression. ]
Is he always...like that?
no subject
[Ro JUST said Nick was her friend but.
Yeah, that doesn't mean she's excusing his shit.]
Sorry about him. If you have to talk to him for any reason... [if ever] ... you can ask me first, if it helps.
no subject
[ So he's just an asshole. Is it comforting to get that closure? She's not sure. ]
Funny enough, I was pretty much only talking to him because of you. I figured if you were friends with him, he must be okay.
no subject
[see: a bit of a dick]
I trust with my life, though. There's a heart of gold in there, trust me.
[like, deep
really, really deep
she also kissed him once but we're not going there yet]
no subject
[ The abrasiveness. But also, maybe, the heart underneath. ]
I thought I might have just caught him on a couple of bad days. After what we all went through, we kinda earned the right to be in bad moods.
no subject
[Or maybe she just guessed after Rochelle said his name. Honestly, she's just curious to know if Nick ever mentioned her.]
no subject
[ She ain't a kid genius for nothing. ]
no subject
[Fine by her. They probably DO talk about zombies pretty similarly.]
Still. Sorry about him in... extra advance.
