I must say, I do not personally find them effective. While I suppose some women might find them appealing, they feel a bit insincere to me. I like to know that someone is interested in me for my mind and personality, not only how I look.

Yeah but you can't ask out people you already know all the time, right? You go on dates to get to know someone, but you have to get them to agree to the date first to begin with!

I suppose that's true. My personal experiences are likely outside the scope of what is considered normal by most people. Even so, I'd be far more amenable to an entreatment of courtship from someone who told me they wanted to become better acquainted because they thought I seemed interesting than because of my appearance.
