Video | June 13th
[The video props up to Spy, sitting somewhat relaxed on his couch and looking at his device with a small frown. Anyone who knows him shouldn't be surprised that he still has the damn mask on, but he's dressed down into an undershirt, not nearly as sharply-dressed as he's accustomed to being.
Eventually, though, he realizes that his watch is, in fact, recording, and even broadcasting. He's live, baby. He swears in French under his breath and regains proper posture, tidying himself up as he goes and pretends he meant to do that.]
Hello. I realize I have not properly introduced myself to this... network? As of yet. You can call me the Spy. Spy, for short. Or 'Jacques', if neither of those suit you. I have a question for the collective mass out there.
[He pauses, as though realizing his question is a little ridiculous, but he pushes through.]
Has anyone noticed grapes for purchase or harvesting anywhere? Specifically wine grapes, preferably. I've yet to truly investigate, but it's for a project I'd like to pursue in the future.

Voice;
[ Fish is genuinely curious, very interested in their friend. ]
I donβt know much about wine grapes, but they do grow things here on the second level, from what I know.
Voice;
[You can almost hear him wink.]
Second level? It's a good place to start, at least.
no subject
Are you going to go buy grapes? Or making wine?
no subject
Hopefully, the latter. I'm something of a connoisseur if I do say so myself, and I could use a hobby.
no subject
no subject
[honhonhon]
They are. Even when I had a much more exciting job than I currently do, there was nothing like taking some time for myself.
no subject
[You could hear the grin right through that voice.]
Taking time for yourself is always important, darling.
no subject
Besides me.
Of course. The last thing you need is to burn out when you're needed.
[voice]
Thinkin' of your own winery, Jack?
[sorry Spy, if you're actually going to pick a name for yourself, you're getting a nickname
at least he doesn't comment on the lack of a suit]
voice;
[At least try with the pronunciation, Engie!]
But yes. It would be a welcome distraction from teaching.
no subject
[shut the fuck up engie]
Huh. Can't argue that wine's a decent distraction from kids. [Or adults, but a lot of folks are "kids" when you're in your forties.] Or the trials and tribulations of education. Sounds about up your alley.
no subject
I'll never hear the end of this, will I.
[THANKS, ANGELA]
Indeed. Plus, the wine here isn't terrible, but you can always improve.
no subject
[Thanks, Angela!!]
ChΓ’teau Backstab on an alien world, huh? [That's weird on a Texan accent, but whatever.] I reckon we could use some better drink here in general. Beer ain't the same.
You thinking of gettin' some land here, or somethin'?
no subject
[Plus he did say anyone could call him that if they preferred.]
I'm not sure yet. I'll have to look into if I need a permit of any kind, but why not take matters into my own hands? Brewing beer shouldn't be too hard as well.
no subject
Wouldn't be surprise of those families in the grove offer land out to folks, or at least plots. Can't say for sure, though. I've been shoppin' for property myself, but I'm lookin' more to the rest of the city. I'd pay to see you brew beer, though.
no subject
Me? Oh no. Perhaps only if I was feeling incredibly creative. That was more towards anyone that may consider it much more seriously than I would.
You're looking for a place as well? What are you planning to do with it?
no subject
You're tuggin' my heartstrings, hoss. You know I'm a beer man.
Somethin' like that. I'm looking for a garage, something I could make a real workshop out of. I've been thinkin' about establishing myself for a while now, actually, something where I can call my own shots.
Actually found a spot on Level 3 around Caihong... with a roomy second floor too. Nice enough to live there, if I wanted to.
no subject
[He's not actually sorry.]
I can't say I'm surprised. You always seemed like the type that likes to make his mark on the world. Although I suppose it would be nice to have a place to escape to if the apartments grew too quaint.
no subject
[He's definitely not, but Engineer will take it.]
Figure so. Guess it could get lonely, compared to the apartments, but it ain't like I don't got legs. Besides, workin' for alien scientists has been... informative, but I think I need my base of operations, doin' what I do best.
Hell, maybe I just miss the old job.
no subject
I have to admit, as nonsensical and horrifically dangerous as it was, there was never a dull moment in mercenary work. Not to mention the pay. Are you missing home?
no subject
Liked it plenty. Just didn't expect to get nostalgic over the consistent threat of death.
[Don't lie to yourself, Engie. You got off on the danger just as much as the others.]
But... yeah. Home too.
[He likes Lunatia plenty. But it's one of those nice-place-to-visit-but-you-wouldn't-want-to-live-there situations.]
no subject
[He kind of misses those dumbasses back home. They grow on you after a while, even if most of them are idiots.]
no subject
[Engie misses them too. Hell, he wouldn't even mind Soldier and Demoman's shenanigans around here.]
no subject
I have to admit, I've grown to miss it too.
no subject
[He's kidding.]
no subject
[He's kidding. Kind of.]
no subject
[he's known Spy long enough to learn that his mock threats can still be still vague, actual threats.]
no subject
[He's right though.]

Well, it really depends on the type of wine. Different types exist based on the grapes made to create the wine and whether or not the skins are left on when you ferment them.
Generally, white or rosΓ© wines are more tart and crisp, while red wines tend to fall more bitter. Of course, there's also dessert wine, and then sparkling wine, which has its own classification based on a scale of dry to sweet.
[He pauses to laugh quietly.]
Our supervisor described tasting "raisins and gasoline", but her palate was somewhat unrefined.
no subject
Raisins and gasoline! [a sunny laugh.] Unrefined as she may be, it sounds rather appetising to me!
[... but there is still a question to be asked.]
What is "dry"?
no subject
[He pauses for a moment, trying to find the best way to describe 'dry'.]
The easiest way to explain it... would probably be the literal absence of sugar. It's a more natural flavor.
no subject
I am not sure if they have the kind of oil here that I could safely consume...
[Though he was hardly the sort to indulge even in his own world.]
I believe I understand, though. Which do you prefer, if you do indeed have a preference?
no subject
[But enough about that, let's talk about his favorite subject: his opinions. He sighs, almost wistfully, as he answers.]
I personally prefer a good shiraz, or a syrah - it's a red wine, somewhere in the middle of the sweetness scale. It usually tastes like dark berries and pepper.
no subject
Like Spy, for instance.]
I see! What a curious combination! Have you managed to find a suitable replacement here?
no subject
no subject
ChΓ’teau... Backstab? [He sounds somewhere between amused and bewildered.] Dare I ask?
no subject
[He's starting to learn that some things about his world are a little weird here, but he still forgets sometimes.]

video
( It's a fond little thing, and she looks about as she always does, wrapped in a cozy knit and coffee mug in her hand, the sounds of the plaza beside her. Her amusement's twinkling right there to the time it takes him to realize the device is recording and he scrambles for a topic from where he'd been lounging. )
The fruit here is a tad different, but I have seen and found similar enough things to what we had back home, yes. You should be able to find some without too much difficulty in the markets that pop up around the Groves.
Do you know how to make wine?
video
[As curt as the greeting is, there's an unmistakable fondness in his voice. And, thanks to his technological blunder, a little embarrassment.]
Excellent. It looks like I have another excuse to visit the markets.
I'm not nearly an expert quite yet, but I do have some ideas on how it works.
no subject
If you let me know when you go, I wouldn't mind tagging along. I find myself there every few days as it is. My neighbor and I have been trying to learn how to cook.
Is there any part of it you think I could help with...? Even if it's just helping you create the necessary equipment.
no subject
I suppose finding the equipment might be a challenge. And seeing if I need a permit of some kind.
no subject
As for the permit, I suppose just starting for personal production should be fine. I would worry about a permit once you've perfected it and want to expand beyond yourself and whoever you share a bottle with.
And just say when; I'll be sure to meet you there.
no subject
A good point. I like to have my bases covered. But I'll be sure to share.
