You know, for all that "it was a dark and stormy night" is a hackneyed cliché, I have to admit that I really can't think of a more apt way of describing the state of affairs outside. There's already water collecting in the streets; I imagine it won't be long before the roads and walkways are covered over. And from the sound of it, this storm is going to get worse before it gets better.

Squalls like this weren't altogether uncommon in the place I consider to be my native land; it was a wild place where raw power governed, so it only seems natural that it would have weather to match. I can't deny that even now, I still find a certain raw beauty in the fury of it all. But all the same, these sorts of storms are not to be trifled with, or taken lightly — and they're far better experienced from beneath the shelter of a sturdy roof and solid walls.

If you're not already prepared to weather a deluge, I would recommend remedying that quickly. There's something that feels oddly vicious about this particular tempest, and I won't be at all surprised if trying to brave it becomes hazardous sooner rather than later.

Your partner sounds a little like somebody I know. You would think if we're meant to save the planet, they would have chosen more people with common sense to do it, but I guess it doesn't always work out that way.

Oh, I've learned never to underestimate the whims of the powers that be. Assuredly they're up to something, for all that they've made us pawns in their game.

I don't hate them, really. I'm still making discoveries in the magical realm of garbage snack food, but I think crunchy is good. Spicy is even better! But most sweet things give me a toothache afterwards.

Have you been pairing said foods with their appropriate drinks? Some are designed to go with a particular beverage, to enhance the experience.

I mean...I understand the concept, of course, but I shouldn't have to purchase alcohol to make a bag of miniature donuts palatable, should I?

Not that it wouldn't be a fun night in. What would be your recommendation there, Lord of the Sweet Tooth?

I don't know of any brand of alcohol that pairs well with miniature donuts, actually. Save perhaps a hard cider, with the right kind of donut.

Is that your test snack of choice, then?

More that I got sick of the miniature donuts a third of the way through the bag. Now they're just...sitting on my table. Taunting me. And I don't like wasting food.

Pair them with fresh fruit or an apple cider. That should do the trick. Something acidic will help to cut through the heaviness of the sweet dough.
