I have done a lot of research, and every answer I seem to find points me to a different place.

Because there are times that they will be in pain and you will be unable to help. Or they may begin down the wrong path and go somewhere that you are unable to.

I understand. I was unable to help him once before, and it felt really uncomfortable for me.

But it can be very pleasant as well, lifting your spirits from the darkest of depths with very little more than a smile or kind word. Simply being near them will lift your spirit and make the world seem more colorful.
