CASE 001 ♞ [VIDEO]

( The feed flickers on to a young man sitting at a table in the apartments in all of his courtroom finery. While he very much looks as though he's done his best to make himself as presentable as possible, there's no disguising the bags under his eyes. This is very much a man who has not had very a good night's sleep in a long time. )

Good morning. For those who I've not met before, my name is Miles Edgeworth. I was a prosecuting attorney from Los Angeles, California, in the United States of America on the planet Earth.

( Truly, what has his life come to that he has to make that clarification! )

I have been reflecting on the events that have occurred since our arrival on this planet, particularly during the festival. ( The plants had been bizarre and all, but he hadn't overly involved himself with them, having found other people more suited to what he has decided to consider extreme weeding. )

While I understand that the natives of this world might be more accustomed to free intimate contact between strangers, I consider it downright criminal that our food and drink at the festival might have been laced with substances that affect our behaviour without our knowledge or consent. If anyone suspects they may have consumed some of the contaminated items, I would be most interested in talking with you further.

What happens if you are unable to find any evidence?

[She suspects that the guilty party escapes punishment. But suppose they actually were guilty?]

I mean, with someone who has done wrong.

There is always evidence. Criminals are never as clever as they think.

You sound very confident of that. Ideally, I'm inclined to agree with you, but idealism isn't always the same thing as realism. I take it that means you've never experienced a situation where the criminal got away.

( Of course, much of his confidence is bluster, and it's fortunate for him that this is an audio communication, as she won't have to see the way he winces as he recalls the criminals he has failed to bring to justice. There is a brief moment of silence, but then he asks: )

What do you do in your world when there is little to no evidence of a transgression?

[OOC: Apologies for my lateness!]

[She doesn't reply immediately and this is because she isn't sure she has a very good reply, as it were. It's not exactly a common occurrence and the Midna of the past was a very different Midna from the one who reclaimed her throne.]

When I was younger and more foolish, I imagine I didn't do things quite properly. [And that's very hard for her to squeeze out. But it's a little easier if she pretends the younger Midna wasn't her at all.] In my present days, such has not happened. Yet. I suppose more investigation would be needed.

( He can't help but ask, more out of selfishness than anything else: )

What did you do when you were younger?

( Please let there be someone who had made poorer choices than him. )

I may have shirked my responsibility from time to time.

[Or all of the time. But for Midna to admit she has any flaws is almost like a step up in the world. She doesn't do so easily. She comes out of it, however, knowing that she has strengthened as a ruler.

At least so she hopes.]

( Ah, the folly of youth. Yet, Edgeworth feels the need to ask: )

This shirking of your responsibility... you mean that you avoided punishing wrongdoers, even when it was necessary?

Hm.

[She pauses for several long moments.]

It means I made someone else make the decision for me so I wouldn't have to take responsibility for it.

Well, you were young. It is not uncommon for young rulers to have regents and the like to make decisions for them.

I suppose that's true, yes. Although there's a difference between choosing not to make the decision and not being old enough to have that responsibility.

If you don't mind me asking, how old were you at the time?

A good question. I couldn't tell you how old I am now, much less then.
But we could say I was old enough to know better.

( Wait, what. )

What do you mean you don't know how old you are?

That is what I said. I suppose I'm unable to determine the passing of time where I come from. We do not have a rising and setting sun, like those of the Light Realm.

[And she doesn't even know if that's what that is. It's just conjecture based on her time in Hyrule.]

( He has to ask: )

Do you... sleep?

[She pauses. ...Why is that important?]

I can experience being tired, yes. If I'm tired, I sleep.

[Although she wonders if any of the Twili really need sleep. Perhaps not. It might be more like a bonus.]

And you do not count your days by the occasions that you sleep?

( Fascinating. )

No. I see no reason to do so.
Time is not so important, I've found. Not the way that it is here.

Are you... immortal?

( And he takes a deep breath after asking, because honestly, how ridiculous. )

My apologies. This line of questioning is irrelevant.

[She laughs.]

No. You are fine to ask. In fact, you are the first and I see no reason not to indulge your curiosity.

Ageless, perhaps. Immortal, I don't believe so. I assume I am perfectly capable of withering away into nothing. I simply haven't yet. I also don't intend to for quite some time.

I truly am the first to ask?

( It seems like the thought of thing that should be asked about. )

And I am to assume that there are others like you where you are from, am I not? Do they too eventually wither away into nothing after a very long time?

You truly are.

[She pauses for some moments. She's not certain she's seen another of her kind pass on. Perhaps Zant. But she's not sure that really counts. He really didn't wither away. But then...]

I assume so. We're not impossible to kill. I've only seen one of my people die.

[But probably many others have died as the years have dwindled on without her even knowing.]

I find that surprising. You would think people would be more curious about unfamiliar cultures and situations.

( Or maybe they're just more polite. Moving on... )

So perhaps functionally immortal, but not invincible, then.

It may be a result of some mistaking me for a citizen of Lunatia. [For good reason. Midna looks like she fits right in.]

It is possible. It never mattered to me what we were. Only that we. Well. Were. Is it really so fascinating? Perhaps you'd better like to see me in the flesh?

[Did she just titter? She absolutely tittered.]
