It did get tense at first, but my friend who was here longer chose to be honest with me about what had happened. Talking out the reason for our anger at each other helped us understand where we went wrong, and get back on good terms.
It was mine. I kept secrets when I should have asked for help, and it put me into a position where I thought I had no choice but to kill him, and he wasn't sure enough I didn't want to to take the risk of letting me know he had a plan to fake his death.
We each wound up thinking the other didn't really care about us, when the truth was just that my inability to trust him made it seem too risky for him to trust me.
