Yes. Sometimes you can’t help it, when the circumstances are out of your control. But you learn how to control your circumstances, too.

Mm! It's very good to learn to think on your toes, as it were. But of course, there come times when you aren't able to think and stategize at all... that is when you have to rely upon your own instincts and skill.

So... that said... how good would you consider yours are?

[ dextera likes this less and less, but he’s not the sort of person that can politely leave a conversation when the other person is actually speaking to him. he’s trapped. ]

They’re OK. They’re better than my ability to strategize. I’ve grown a lot.

It hasn’t. [ but, he sounds less sure of himself, speaking so quietly, than might have been portrayed through text. ] Fighting for survival is sad.

I’m not fighting… not here.

[ he speaks slowly, cautiously. it’s not that he’s afraid of revealing too much about himself, but rather, he’s trying to come to conclusions as he speaks. ]

For fun. The reason why I fight is for fun.

[ there are people like that in the world. dextera knows that. some people love the thrill of the fight, but not him. he never could. ]

What’s fun? Dying? I don’t understand.

[ Hisoka dislikes the idea of lemons bothering him. He doesn't want weak people coming after him. Also, with how powers and abilities are disrupted thanks to relying on chroma.... ]

I wouldn't say dying is fun. It's more the thrill of fighting someone. [ :) It's a half-truth. What he enjoys, what he finds most pleasurable, is seeing the face of someone who thinks that they have complete control crumble as they choke on their own blood. :D ]

[ dextera shakes his head, though hisoka can’t see him. with the incredible clarity of these modern devices, though, it’s possible hisoka can hear him shifting uncomfortably. he sounds like the coffin man, in a way, though considerably less… genial, about his morbid interests.

or perhaps its that his geniality feels a little sick. ]

But isn’t it thrilling because you’re afraid of dying?

I can't say that is something I'm afraid of.

[ His smile feels like it is curling around each and every word. ]

If you don't go in expecting to die, what's the fun of doing it in the first place?

[ dextera is quiet, and only the sound of his breathing makes it clear that he hasn’t just ended communication altogether. when he does speak, there’s the false start of one quiet sound, a pause, and then he comes up with what he wants to say. ]

Would you fight against someone you knew could kill you? Someone who would?

[ Before he speaks, there is a soft, little laugh that bubbles out past Hisoka's lips. It can't quite be call an involuntary snicker due to how he doesn't cut off the laughter, but it also doesn't completely voluntary. ]

Sorry, sorry. [ A slight beat. ] But yes. I would fight against someone who I knew could and would kill me.

[ he is not comforted by that laugh, but then, the laugh was likely not intended to be comforting. ]

[ another pause, but this time, it’s intentional. maybe it’s even confident, as dextera frowns to himself on the other side of the line. he doesn’t want to fight. he doesn’t, but at the same time, he feels like he has some kind of duty to show this person what a dangerous line of thinking he’s traveled down. ]

If we ever fought, I could kill you. [ he doesn’t sound proud of it, though; it’s a burden. ] There are always people like that. It could happen at any time, so please don’t chase it.

[ His eyes sparkle a little at the calm manner which the young man says that he could kill him. It makes him quite happy to hear that there's someone could so casually say that they'd be able to kill someone -- even if they sound unhappy about it, even if it is a burden.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, but. ]

But why? Are you worried about me?

[ is he worried? why else would he warn someone not to chase death? it’s not anything the man individually has done to make dextera worry, but dextera wants to teach him to respect his life all the same. ]

I am. You seem… [ he pauses, then starts again. ] No one acts like this without a reason.

[ Ah.

What a nice boy.

A smile is felt wrapping itself around his words -- or maybe, it is more like it feels like the smile he's wearing is strangling his words with merriment. ]

Well ... I won't deny I have an issue or two, if that's what you're saying.

[ dextera doesn’t know how to proceed, but he’s come too far. ]

Everyone does. [ he fidgets, even if hisoka can’t see it. ] But some issues… manifest differently. I’m sorry. I’m not trying to insult you.

[ He cocks his head to the side even though the young man can't see it. ]

But you're right. Everyone has their own issues. Mine are just ... a little more troublesome to those around me. [ Ha-ha. ] Anyway... you're a really good boy to worry about me.

[ a “good boy”… it makes him feel strangely slimy to hear that. it’s the same feeling he gets in retrospect when he thinks about the archangel declaring his fondness. ]
