I will not hide my identity nor pretend these words are not attached to me. There were men who thought I committed many wrongs before I came here. One man held me accountable and spared me nothing besides a lingering death, which leads me to my question: in your estimation, are there any crimes that are unforgivable?

What a common man or woman cannot - should not - do, a king or a queen can do for the good of their people, correct? Great sacrifices are expected in battle - in war - however do you think that a ruler's life should be forfeit for them? What good can they do if they are slain prematurely?

I can admit when I am wrong, but on this...

I don't understand.

[ Being around for 800-odd years should be good for something, right? But yes, turning the questions around helps, though not necessarily makes things better. ]

When you choose an action, we choose its consequences. All of them, the ones we intend and the ones we don't. Accepting that we chose them lets us be better prepared for when they come.

Or choose better.

Some don't. Some do. And you're not dead here, so accepting that you need to either learn how to ignore those questions or find a way to do something about them. And if the people concerned are not here, I suggest focusing on the first option and finding other things to focus on. It's surprisingly refreshing.

He must be very, very important to you.

[ Ah. ]

So to change the earlier question - would you have forgiven him specifically?

And if you wouldn't have, what makes him not forgiving you different?

That would suggest three options:

You are kinder than he is

He means more to you than you mean to him

Or you either took or were about to take from him something that was even dearer to him than you.

I'm also probably not the best person to try to help. If the one I care about that much decides to end me, I'll go willingly.

[ And he's not even close to jesting - he has put the power to do so in His Highness's hands himself. ]

Kings and queens perish anyway. Is it not better to arrange that your realm does not depend on you than to try to protect yourself at any cost, if your interest is truly the lives of others?

[ Hua Cheng, your subjects are ghosts and demons anyway, it's not exactly comparable... ]

Then again, kingdoms get thrown into chaos when their time comes, too. That is how the world works. Sometimes it's wrong, and sometimes it's right. Those caught in the events can never see which it will be.

[ Hua Cheng ponders the words he has been reading and in a display of incredible self-control avoids asking just how young this Mistress Mother of Dragons is.

Then again, from the perspective of eight hundred of years of age, most people are on the young side.
]

Then is it right to stay trapped trying to understand people who are not here and a place that you can no longer change? What was, was. Whatever choices you, or he, or anyone else made wrong, they are already made.
