[After much, much fiddling with the device on his wrist - which at first brougt some interesting flashbacks of a certain other wrist device he was forced to wear one time - Jigen finally manages to get the video feed feature of the thing going, and the first thing that's on the screen is his less than amused face, a cigarette burning between his lips.]
So, this "moonlacing" deal... [He takes a long drag from his cigarette, head shaking for a moment.] Not sure what this place's plan is but they couldn't have picked a worst guy for the job. [The only other person he can think of that would be a worse fit is Goemon.]
Am I really expected to get all lovey dovey with strangers to generate some mystical energy? Yeah, not happening any time soon.
But I should at least introduce myself, since I'm here and all. Name's Jigen Daisuke, and despite these... [He points at the bunny ears that have now replaced his own.] I'm a completely normal human. Well, I guess these have their advantages. I feel like my hearing is more accurate.
I guess I'll be seeing you people soon, hm? [The feed unceremoniously ends without either a good bye or wave of a hand. Yeah... not the friendliest guys around.]

video; UN: mercy ) o nyello again 😚
A spoonful of sugar, as Mary Poppins says. She's bundled up in a sweater with some steaming mug between pale palms, looking fresh in from the cold with color high in her cheeks and thankfully no traits in sight. She'd be a fair bit fluffier in the hair (and, you know, there'd be ram horns and sharp teeth and all). )
Perhaps I can help elaborate a bit further; that "mystical energy" does serve a few different purposes, one of which I'm sure you'll find important. It keeps us from crystallizing, for starters. Running too low has adverse effects, but as others have said, it doesn't have to be anything too terrible to maintain. Some people just push their way through crowded markets and let that count, fleeting as it may be. Or sitting closer to others on the trams. Since that energy is what essentially powers the city here and assists in plant growth for crops, you're compensated for being the middleman as well.
You'll find you're far from alone with those ears, though not everyone's "traits" arrive at the same time. My name is Angela; I'm a doctor who was brought here the same as you, some months back. I have a clinic here on the beach if you ever find yourself in need of a bit of bandaging.
( Whether he answers or no doesn't bother her. So long as he gets the memo that it's a bit crucial in the end, she'd be content, really. )
Video; UN:revolving (good golly it's you! 😲 you here too!!)
He figures it's polite to at least thank this lady for her help and for making him less nervous about the whole thing. He did remember the welcome committee telling him he would pretty much turn into a crystal if he didn't do the moonlace deal, and that was certainly making him very uneasy.]
Well Angela, I guess I gotta thank you for that run down. So I guess as long as I don't hole myself up inside my home I'm good, hm? [Well, he does like staying isolated, not only because he prefers to lead his life like that, but also because his life of crime forced him to do that on a daily basis. But here, no one knows about who he is, right?] The bustle and hustle of the city isn't really my thing, but I guess it's better than the alternative. [That is having to get involved with people, or turning into a crystal.]
And I don't think I'll need a doctor while I'm here. At least I hope I don't. [OK, that kinda made it sound like he doesn't want to see her, which is a bit rude to say to someone he just met.]
(me here!! take two electric boogaloo for jigen & angie cr yaaaaay)
That's about the gist of it, yes. And you're absolutely welcome. I know how overwhelming it is on arrival, here, and the scientists' enthusiasm hasn't dulled one bit since I arrived with the first group here, about nine months prior. The "holing up" may seem appealing during some parts of the months though, I'll admit. Especially seeing as you seem to be under Iris, with those ears. I had been under Iris for most of my time here too, until recently, but everyone is affected differently. Do you recall what you were told of the various effects of the moons, here?
And no, I don't suppose so! No one likes needing a doctor, but I promise I can make good conversation if you'd ever like to come see me anyway; I have fresh croissants most mornings.
( No harm done, clearly. She didn't take offense and just twisted it into something playful, so you know. )
(they will finally meet proper!!)
Yeah, they talked to me about the moon stuff, how it has phases and that they affect people, but if I were to be honest with you that kind of went right over my head. Really could use a refresher on that if you don't mind filling me in. [He feels like he's demanding too much from this random lady he just met, but, well, with her being a doctor, she's probably used to having people ask for help, right?]
I don't doubt you are good at conversations. [The fact she's managing to get more than a couple words out of him is enough proof of that.] And if I'm ever short on breakfast I guess I will consider the offer. [A very lame attempt at a joke.]
no subject
I wouldn't mind in the least. Would it be easier in person? Over coffee? My treat.
( Then she can touch her fingertips to his wrist and let him feel the chroma for himself, lest he think it some ridiculous magic. Besides, she likes being able to sit and chat with people. It's easier to read their body language on the whole than trying to parse it through a hologram. The praise he offers is one thing and the "short on breakfast" joke another, getting a soft breath of a laugh out of her. )
Breakfast will always be waiting, though it's been a bit too chilly right off the beach for a morning stroll. Best make it a brunch.
no subject
It's pretty unlikely that Angela will shoot him though, even considering his luck.]
Can't be that much of a bad idea to meet up. This holo technology thing is really weird to me and I should probably take a better look around this place anyway. [He shrugs a little dismissively, but it's obvious he isn't completely disinterested about it.] I'm afraid you're gonna need to give me directions to the nearest cafe though. I'm not exactly familiar with this place.
[He nods at that last part, lips curving into a somewhat amused smile. Probably his first since he got to this place.] Then brunch it is.
no subject
It does take some getting used to, honestly. You aren't alone in that. And I don't mind giving you directions; here. I'm going to attach a location pin, and if you touch it on your device's projected screen, it will give you a real-time path to follow.
( Et voila— a little ding announces its attachment to their conversation and just as she says, it will open a location to the beach-side cafe near her clinic, so she can meet him and go back to work in short enough order. )
Will that work for you? Shall we say, meet in an hour? A bit past brunch, just this once.
( With a wink, of course. )
OK so this is the change from video to action I think???
And, jarring is right, specially all this new technology he has to learn from square one. Cellphones aren't even a thing from the time he's come from, so things like touch screens are incredibly hard to deal with. H's been doing a decent job so far though.]
Well... this little thing sure can do a lot, hm? [He comments when she sends him the location and a map pops up. That's... one handy tool to have. He wonders what other functions it has.]
I guess...? I think I might actually need an hour to figure out how to get there proper even with this map so... I don't think that's a proble- [He stops on his tracks when she winks at him and he quickly averts his gaze, some color rising to his cheeks. He's certainly not used to this sort of direct approach!]
I-I'll see you then. [He nervously fumbles with the buttons of his device and manages to cut the call, letting out a sigh. Why is he always getting into situations he knows are going to make him feel awkward?]
works perf!
Which is to say, if he has questions about the device, she can likely answer them after nine, ten months of living in this place. She clearly flusters him with the wink before the feed shuts off and has a good little laugh to herself, sufficiently charmed. Anyone who can react like that can't be so bad in the end, in her humble opinion. She'll let him off without much more teasing, and an offer to call her again if he needs the help.
When he arrives, he'll recognize her sitting on the patio bundled up in an ivory peacoat over a pine green sweater with a thick cowl neck, one leg crossed over the other in tall boots with her coffee between both hands, smile idle and watching others around her. Definitely people-watching, smile quirking higher if she sees something amusing and lashes lowering as she dips her head for another sip. He'll be able to nearly make it to her, about eight steps off when her next sweep catches sight of him and he'll see her light up in recognition. )
Daisuke— you made it with... twelve minutes to spare. ( And there's that accent again in realtime, curling up at the ends just a touch playfully, Germanic. Chipper. And then she's offering him a porcelain-warmed hand, soft and slender. If he's the type to read hands, all he'll find are impressions of scalpels like writer's callouses at the tips of her fingers along the inner sides of the joints, not the handle of a gun. )
no subject
Looks sure are deceiving.
And speaking of looks, Jigen doesn't have much to work with in the clothing department. He just arrived and the only thing he got from the welcome committee, aside from a change of clothes, is a thick coat to fight off the cold. It's not like he had time and resources to go out shopping. It's not like he cares much about how he presents to others though.
It's a bit of a struggle to find his way through the streets of Lunatia, as he expected, but it's a little less convoluted with the help of the map. He really needs to see what other functions that small device can offer.
When he gets to their meeting spot, he sees her idly watching the people pass by. She looks much taller than he imagined and, when she turns to him, even at a distance her eyes are way brighter than through the video. Even he, with his less than favorable view of women, has to admit she's quite stunning.]
I'll try to beat my record next time. [He says as he walks up to her, hands in the pockets of his coat to keep them from freezing. They are still pretty cold though when he extends one of them to shake Angela's hand. The contrast between their hands is stark, with his being way rougher and calloused, not only from dealing with guns, but also his many tribulations. It's pretty clear to see some scars here and there on the back of his hand.
And... for some reason shaking her hand feels funny. Maybe it's that Chroma deal?]
So, guess I'm here for you to explain how things work to me.
no subject
He looks just fine when he approaches, and she's visibly amused with his cold hand as its offered to her to shake— usually she's the one with the cold hands. She covers the back of it with her other and will keep ahold of it if he takes a seat beside her when she tips her head in invitation, giving him a brisk little rub between her palms. He has rough hands, feeling scars beneath sensitive fingertips along the tendons on the back, and along the sides of long fingers, but she doesn't seem on the cusp of surprise.
Chroma twinkles along her nerves and up her forearms from the contact, but it's a familiar warmth to her, by now.
Instead, she allows him to have his hand back only on the silent agreement that she presses her hot coffee into his palm and he warms his hands on it as she had been. The girl bustling about the inside is keeping her topped up with regular trips out to the patio, and left her a little porcelain container of cream on the table. )
If you end up too early you'll even beat me here; I don't like to keep others waiting, you know. ( And a little laugh to accompany it, giving her wrist a little shake to shift her sleeve back and wake up her device. ) And I suppose you are. It's nice to meet you. Would you like a moment to warm your hands up before we get started on that profile of yours? We can work around from there.
no subject
When she covers his hand with hers, he gets a little uneasy at first, but the strange sensation of Chroma travelling from his fingers and up his arm helps with him not pulling his hand away immediately. It's a funny and strange feeling, but it certainly isn't bad. Jigen isn't sure if it's good either though. So he'll just classify it as a 'thing' for now.
He takes a seat on a chair next to her, but not too close. He likes his own personal a little too much to get any closer. And for a moment, when she breaks the contact between their hands, he finds himself craving for more of it, but it's such a short, passing thought it takes him just a second to dismiss it. Instead he focuses on the warmth of the coffee cup that's offered him and he places both hands on in, letting out a silent sigh of relief. That's much better.]
Don't worry, I'm very patient about waiting for other people. [It's said as a joke but it's a little more... sad than that.] It's nice to meet you as well. You are probably the first person I talked to directly in person here. I mean, besides the folks that welcomed me here.
[He looks at the cup on his hands.] I think first I need to order my own coffee instead of hogging yours, hm? And honestly, I actually forgot about that stupid profile on that... what's it called again? App? Yeah...
no subject
The chroma, however, is always nice. And it warms them both. Mutual perks and all. She's aware that he keeps his distance as he occupies one of the other chairs at the table and watches him, his expression and his eyes more than anything. )
That makes two of us, then. Still, it's in better taste not to keep someone waiting, don't you think? And I'm honored. Hopefully I'll be an acceptable first point of contact. How have you been settling in?
( As for the coffee, she waves him off genially and raises that same hand to try and catch the attention of the waitress inside when she sees her turn about, and gets a nod of acknowledgment and a smile. In a minute, then. )
You can hog it a little while longer. Did you not have technology like this where you're from? No smart phones?
no subject
Which is why Angela's staring at him makes him a little more nervous than usual, but he pretends to be unfazed quite well.]
True, true... Most people value punctuality a lot, don't they? And I'm pretty sure you are a good enough first contact in this place. If anything you are being very helpful. [And... rather easy on the eyes. Jigen could be jaded but he wasn't blind and he knew a pretty lady when he saw one. Even with her less than human appendages she still looked rather nice.
But he's getting sidetracked.]
Nah... We had barely mastered regular phones back home. [It's a hug exaggeration, yes, but this entire place is a little too high tech for him. He feels like he's lived in the stone age before coming to Lunatia.] These... [He looks at the band over his wrist.] They are a little tricky to use, but they are certainly handy.
no subject
I suppose, depending on their personalities. I've been working alongside the military for so long it's just ingrained in me at this point. Besides, a surgeon running late on a trauma case doesn't bode well for the patient. But I'm always happy to be helpful.
( She rests back in her chair with long legs crossed under the table, turning to him a little more comfortably as one arm rests over the padded back. (And she doesn't have any moon traits! Angela is 100% human for this.) )
The devices do get tricky; a lot of people here are from a time without "smart devices", and many still with no technology to speak of at all. I believe they only really started being created in the early year 2000s. I'm from 2076, myself, so it wasn't venturing too far from what I already knew of. Some things are still quite different even then.
( But she catches sight of the waitress heading out, so she tips her chin up toward her for his attention to redirect and make his order. )
lol I misread your past tag where you mentioned her traits jkhgfkahf ignore that then XD
He allows himself to sit back more comfortably as well, hands still hogging Angela's warm cup of coffee, even though his fingers are not even that cold anymore. Maybe he just got a little distracted.]
Wha... 2076? [He sounds surprised. Shocked even. Never in a million years he would guess she was from such a distant future.] Now I really feel like I'm an old relic, being from the early seventies. [They... had more than 100 years apart from each other, time wise. Could he even keep up with someone so far ahead from him?
When the waitress approaches to get his order, he finally realizes he's been holding on to Angela's cup this entire time, and finally let go of it.]
Anh, coffee. Sugar, no milk or cream. [He says, as the waitress nods and disappears inside the cafe again.]
Well... what can you teach me about these things them? [He stuffs one of his hands inside the pocket of his coat and leaves the other, with the device on his wrist, resting on the table.]
UR GOOD just wanted to clarify goin forward c:
( But she's amused as she says it, no harm no foul as they both settle in and delve into a proper conversation. The year gap shouldn't surprise her anymore, but sometimes it still does— thankfully he's not the first person she's met from the 1970s! )
You're not an old relic, Daisuke. And you're not the first I've met from the 1970s! There's an engineer down on the third level, Dell Conagher— he is, as well. And a man named Jacques who works at the academy. He teaches theater. Many people here are from the 1990s and early 2000s, but there are also a good handful from my when and I'm sure plenty beyond it. It's just the nature of this place.
( But the waitress approaches for his order and she'll smile to herself as she gathers her cup back up for a good swallow, two— then holds it for a few moments before setting it back down between them. In case he needs to warm his hands while he waits. )
I see we're opposites on coffee, if nothing else. I'm a "cream and no sugar" gal. Maybe that's what changes in a century. ( Welcome to Bad Joke Land, home of the Bad Jokes. But when he prompts her for the lesson, she'll rest her hand close by so the angle of the hologram is visible to him. She gives her wrist a little shake to wake it up, and the menu pops up before her. ) They're quite simple if you don't wish to delve into all the extra features— the icons keep it pretty straightforward for ease of identifying the features, though some people with no technology at all likely won't recognize many. This one here is for voice calls, like a regular telephone. When you pull it up you have a camera icon in the corner to switch to video, if you prefer a face to face conversation— you just have to be sure to hold your wrist up a bit higher.
The camera is here, and you can tap it to turn its focus either onto you or onto what's in front of you. This here is the feed for others posting, which you managed to do just fine, and they can be any format— it's sort of a bulletin board for socializing, or people posing questions for assistance with this place as you'd figured. And this app right here— it's meant for finding moonlacing partners, but that can be things as simple as coffee meets like this, too. It doesn't have to be too intimate. We can get you set up in a bit.
I was going to go over the moons, too, hm? What do you remember from what the scientists told you on arrival? I know they cram a lot in while you're still reeling; I've tried to tell them to simplify it, but they get so excited...
( She'll just sneak a couple covert pics of him in the meantime when he's at a particularly nice angle or if he smiles— for the app, of course. These things are best done candid, no? )
no subject
At the coffee comment, a short laugh escapes from his lips - probably a good opportunity to snap a sneaky pic of him. It's an incredibly dumb joke, yes, but he's a little amused by it, not to mention he appreciates it that Angela is trying to make him feel a little less inadequate about the whole thing. He still feels he's very out of touch with more futuristic things, but the way she's taking it lightly helps alleviate that feeling.
He pays close attention to her explanations about the communicator. He's trying to get as much info as he can about those from the get go so he doesn't have to pathetically fiddle about with it until he ultimately gives up and needs to ask for help again. He honestly hates to depend on others.]
You don't want to know how long it took for me to figure out how the camera and messaging system on that thing worked. [Really. It was incredibly embarrassing and he still doesn't know how he achieved the feat of actually posting something.] I'm glad you are explaining it to me like I'm five years old though. [He means it. Technology was never his strong suit. That was Lupin's area of expertise.
When she explains the profile app to him, he scoffs.] I'm just glad not many people took interest on me in that thing, because that text it wrote about me is very unfitting. [And invasive. Specially invasive.
Ah yes, the moons. Honestly, what the scientists told him about them just flew over his head for the most part, so he really didn't get the real gist of it.] I guess you could go over those as well. I had people tell me you can get turned into an animal under them and I dunno if I'm a fan of that idea.
no subject
( Which is to say, Jigen should absolutely speak with him again and nerd out a bit with the guy; Dell would probably have a good time over a couple beers showing him his work. Angela does indeed snag a picture as he laughs with a flash of teeth, and another with the warm wind-down smile that lingers, curving his lips. Thank her later, dear. She's definitely trying to bridge the gap and lighten the load of time, so she'd be glad to know she's succeeding and setting him at ease anew. She only shakes her head with an easy smile to his remark on how long it took him, waving it off. Learning curves, right? )
I promise I wouldn't have used the term "socializing" if I were speaking to a five year old. I just know how to be succinct. I'm glad you're finding it easy to understand, though. We'll see what happens once we get that profile updated and gauge your interest from there, hmm? Here, let's see it. Go ahead and open it up, there should be a little gear picture to change the pictures and what's included.
( She's messaging over those pics she just took of him now, filters adjusting some of the colors to be a touch more vibrant with a softer background detail, but otherwise untouched. )
Well, they weren't necessarily wrong. It's usually only a couple of traits at a time— you saw my pictures, no? With the fawn spots, or the ram's horns? Those were from the moons of this place. There are three, each in the sky for five days, then all three at once for another five. First Sanguis, the crimson moon, then Cordis, the blue, and Iris, violet. There are like traits and effects of those who fall under them, specific to each one. Sanguis tend toward aggression and bloodlust, shown as wolves, or snakes, or... mer-creatures, fish, sheep— it's difficult to tell when they mostly just show patches of scales or gills. Cordis is indulgent and prone to blowing money and eating their fill wherever they go, and they run through the chroma energy of this place the quickest. Foxes, owls, cats, butterflies, giving off attractants to others. Then Iris which I believe is yours in particular, and which I had been during the majority of my time here— affectionate and protective, in "heat" more often than not with the same attractants as before, but being affected themselves as well. Rabbits and deer, and rarely, something like jellyfish and possibly bats. A few others have been cropping up or appear during the presence of other races in this world, but...
( She shrugs; that's about the extent of her or anyone else's knowledge. )
It's a short-lived hassle, if a regular one. The important part is the chroma, because if you aren't generating enough to restore what you lose over time, much like a car's fuel tank, you'll run empty and begin to crystallize. It's important to not let it get so low. These devices show our readings at the top. See? Mine is fully green.

He follows her instructions about operating the app, and is rather surprised when she sends him the pictures she snapped. Honestly, he's more surprised by the fact that he didn't notice her taking those. Isn't he supposed to be a little more perceptive than that? He decides to chalk it up to him still being disoriented by this new place and move on.
When the explanation about the moons follow, he listens carefully, nodding to assure her he's listening. In the meantime, the waitress comes with his coffee, which is a relief because his fingers had been growing cold, but he was a little too nervous about hogging Angie's cup again, so he kept his hands to himself.]
Yeah, I remember your photos from the app. That means you are the Sanguis type, hm? [He looks her over for a moment, than smiles after a sip of coffee.] Could've fooled me. I wouldn't take you as the blood thirsty type. [His smile falters after a moment however, when he focuses more on his own moon.] Not sure I like the idea of being "in heat." Makes it look like I'm gonna start behaving like some mindless animal looking for a mate. [He hopes it doesn't come down to that. He can deal with the affectionate and the protective parts though.]
Guess there's no escape from making connections in this place then? [He peeks at the screen of her device. He isn't surprised to see her Chroma gauge full. She's certainly friendly and cordial, so it's certainly easy for her to get closer to others. She's pretty much the polar opposite of him, which makes him wonder why she took such an interest in him.]
no subject
The waitress delivers his coffee and tops Angela's up with a smile before trotting back off, and she'll gather it back to her and add in a bit more cream just in time for him to tease her. )
Hmmm, no, not bloodthirsty. ( And a wink. ) But I do occasionally get quite possessive. And I may bare my teeth if I grow irritated, which hankfully doesn't happen often. I'm quite protective on my own and Sanguis makes that a bit worse, for me. They all affect people in slightly different ways, I think, but the general theme runs about the same. Violent, indulgent, intimate. I'm afraid to say you'll just have to wait and see what happens, for your own effects. They change month to month, as well. Sometimes stronger, sometimes milder.
With my previous experiences being Iris, I wish I could say that's inaccurate; it's a bit half and half. I'll cross my fingers for you all the same. But no, no escaping connections. Not unless you've always dreamed of being a crystal sculpture.
( Isn't the saying "opposites attract", Jigen? Come now. )
no subject
When she corrects him about the bloodthristy part of Sanguis, he feels a little color rise to his cheeks. Ah yes, he should have suspected as much. When she mentions she gets possessive he doesn't quite know how to take those news. He just hopes that doesn't mean she'll immediately latch on to him, because he's absolutely not ready for this type of closeness with anyone just yet.]
So, on top of everything the effects of these moons aren't even consistent from one month to the next? [Great... Jigen mumbles the last word under his breath, frustration clear in his voice as he sips on his coffee. As if growing random appendages wasn't worrying enough.
He can only hope he doesn't get too attention starved when his cycles come up.]
Crystal statue? [Oh boy, there's even more caveats... The bad news just keep on piling up, don't they?]
love past typos... "hankfully" instead of thankfully, king of the hill over here
But she won't latch onto him too terribly, not for a while. Promise. Her possessive behavior is incredibly mild when it comes down to it and she mostly just hugs people to rub her scent on them, which keeps others away from those "marked". No biting just yet, no matter how she teases. )
No, I'm afraid not. But I hope you know you can call me if anything happens, or if you have any questions. If anything concerns you. I won't mind setting your mind at ease once we have an idea of how you're affected. As for the statue bit, if you go too long and deplete your chroma, you'll begin to crystallize. It isn't very pleasant. It's usually a day or two's process, so it isn't irreversible or fast by any means, but it's best to avoid tempting fate in the first place.
