I have...something of a strange dilemma. I came here six months after my birthday, and arrived six months ago...but my birthday is in June. Based on actual length of time I've been alive, I just turned nineteen...but my birthday isn't officially for another half a year.

Do you think I should just go ahead and start listing my age as 19, or would it be to confusing for the people who know what time of year I was born? I know I've already told a few people I'm a Gemini, so waiting would be simpler...but it feels a little weird, going an extra half a year between birthdays.

Honestly, I'd just go with whatever you feel more comfortable with. Everyone here knows about the time weirdness so it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Personally, I'm doing the thing where I'm going based on time I've been alive. If I went with the date on my world than I'd be younger than what I'd be saying I am.

That's my problem, too. And especially in a place like this...I'm not sure how comfortable I am misrepresenting my age, even if I'm claiming I'm younger than I really am. I know the difference between eighteen and nineteen isn't much, but depending on how long we're here...I'll cross my country's age of majority in another year, and that might make a difference to some people.

In my opinion, you should do go with what is more comfortable to you. But if you want a more solid option, I would say you should assume you already advanced one year. The six months difference is quite a lot of time.

It really is. I might be willing to just ignore it if it was closer to my actual birthdate, but six months is...a lot to just brush aside when you're at an age where milestones are still close together.

If I'm here for another year, that would lead to people from Japan thinking of me as a minor until I've already been an adult for several months. That...really doesn't sit well with me, especially with how this place fosters...um. Intimate relationships.

Well, no, this planet has entirely different constellations. But people who recognize Earth astrology would still know that being a Gemini means I was born in June.

I know, but enough people are here from some version of Earth that it's pretty likely that any given person would associate someone being a Gemini with a Summer birthday.

Does it really matter? Biologically speaking one is true and the other is false. But six months isn't really a whole lot.

Maybe just count New Years as the counter?

It might be a lot next year, when it's the difference between being a minor or an adult.

Besides, I always sort of wanted a summer birthday.

That's a much easier length of time to brush aside. And I'd personally prefer a winter birthday, actually. Maybe it would get overlooked by my fans if it was around the same time as Christmas, so they wouldn't use Sae-san as a delivery woman as often.

. . . as someone who's had a similar issue, I say go with what you feel like doing, I guess, I doubt anyone would care. You can consider your age as '19' and then still celebrate your birthday on the proper month but just not "age" yourself?

Ultimately up to you, honestly.

I wasn't planning on having a celebration, but...calling myself older and then just letting anyone who wants to give me presents during the normal time of year is an option.

List your age as whatever you please and just ell people what's going on when [ when you think it's likely you're gonna bone ] it becomes relevant. It's not like nobody else is in the same situation. People will get it either way.

I guess it wouldn't be too hard to explain whenever my exact age is relevant...especially since I don't think there are any milestones at nineteen for it to matter much right away.

We studied time dilation and how it reflects on actual age versus calendar age. When you're dealing with near-lightspeed or greater than lightspeed travel, things get wonky.

Basically, what I've always gone with is chronological age versus what the calendar says. At the end of the day, it's more important how many days you've had in your life rather than how long you've been around, if that makes any sense at all.

Ah, that's right! It's just a theory where I'm from, but supposedly, time slows down around an object as it approaches the speed of light to prevent it from breaking the light barrier.

Your idea makes perfect sense. Subjective time has more effect on physical and mental development, after all.

Sounds basicaly the same as being born on a leap year, right? List whatever age you feel like you are, and don't bother overthinking it.

Not quite the same, but...I guess similar in terms of the calendar and actual time disagreeing. And my last birthday definitely feels like it was a year ago.

Haha, I remember that, back when every year felt like a milestone. I think at this point just sticking with my chronological age would be less confusing, especially if I'm here long enough to hit twenty.
