To send a message to those in power.

Frequently, also, as a cloak for those who couldn't control their own fires, in an attempt to rescue them from the authorities.

In my world there were people who could awaken to the power to control fire known as the burnish. The burnish were ruthlessly hunted by the government for simply exisiting, and were not only imprisoned but also experimented on once captured.

So I lead a resistance group of fellow burnish to save as many as I could, while also hurting the government in the process.

Fear was part of it. That's why the general populace hated us, and what drove most of the establishment of anti-burnish laws.

The other part was the experiments. We were being used as fuel for their machines.

To be frank, I was nearly arrested when I was a child as well, simply for existing while burnish. I managed to get away but a lot of other children weren't nearly so lucky.

[Lio was talking about all of this in the past tense. He did that a lot now, consciously, to try and emphasize to himself that it really was all over. He was surprised more people didn't pick up on that.]

We burnish lost our flames. The source of our fire left our world behind, and us by extension. And the people in power were mostly captured and arrested by what little government was left over after the disasters they caused wiped out half the city along with who even knows how much else of the rest of the world.

We were two weeks into rebuilding when I showed up here. I can't say for sure if things were actually going to improve or not, but we were trying.

Thanks.

Not sure why I felt like sharing, so really, thanks for even listening.

Guess I just wanted to demonstrate that getting arrested doesn't make you a bad person.

What about you, though?
