Okay... I think this might work! What do you think, Chirithy?

[ventus has the camera propped up against something on the counter as he mixes together what looks like the dry ingredients for cookies. there's some flour stuck to his cheek and chiirthy perched atop his head and precariously leaning forward to peer into the mixing bowl. it raises a paw, as if about to say something when it just

tumbles

into the dry mix, sending flour and whatnot up into the air like a giant white cloud. it hits ventus right in the face and the camera's edges are touched with flour. chirithy pops up out of the bowl and laughs a little sheepishly.

ventus just sighs.]

I think... I messed up somewhere along the way.

[ Why would he have bothered with something like that Ventus? ]

[he holds chirithy up, smiling a little.]

Why not try now?

[ Just stands there making an irritated noise through his nose. ]

This isn't going to work. I don't even...

[ Vanitas immediately shuts up and looks away. He doesn't know what Ventus means by calling out with his heart. It's not something he's done before. ]

You don't know that until you try. [he says it quietly, because he wants this to happen - he wants vanitas to have this.]

Master Invi helped me... If I just focus with my heart then Chirithy will come to me. Just- try and focus?

[ Vanitas is already trying to brush off the flour and has taken to pacing. Why is he even indulging in this nonsense? It doesn't benefit him in any way. So what if the Spirit does end up coming to him, that they are still bound? All that it means is that Ventus and himself are still linked but not one. ]

This is stupid.

[ Of course his conflicting thoughts and feelings are going to have an adverse effect. Ven might want to be prepared. ]

[all ventus can do is watch vanitas pace the room, chirithy looking on with a worried expression which might look a little silly when they were still covered in flour.

it feels like they're walking over a minefield.]

[ See, the darkness is wavering around Vanitas right about now. Shifting. Warping. There's a good chance that one of his Unversed are going to be born from this. Vanitas is certainly worked up enough for it. ]

Because it is! I can't be whole and you want me to call out to this thing that was ours!? I can't go back! I can't go forward!

[ He knocks an appliance off of the counter top. Doesn't care if he breaks it. Then his fits hits a wall. ]

Not allowed to be you! Not allowed to be me! Every thing leads back to your dumb face and there's nothing I can do about it!

Vanitas...

[it's fine if he breaks an appliance, ven doesn't even react when it crashes to the floor or even when vanitas punches at the wall. he can feel chirithy flood with concern and worry as vanitas keeps pacing around the room. ventus squeezes them to his chest for a moment before chirithy disappears in a small puff of smoke and then reappears at vanitas' feet. they look up at him, little eyes turned in worry.]

We can go forward together, Vanitas. I'll wait for you for however long it may take until we can all be together again.

[ventus steps closer, hands clenching at his sides.] Vanitas, I... I know I can't give you promises or- or anything like that yet, but I am going to make this right. For both of us.

[ The only reason he stops is because Chirithy is right there. Apparently not even Vanitas has it in him to step on the Spirit. Maybe not right now. He quiets, at least. Darkness gradually ebbing a little. There's no immediate threat now, at least. ]

You can't. There's no making it right. There's no together again.

[ When he turns, it's to jab Ventus in the chest. ]

It's not broken anymore! He's all healed up with no fissures or missing pieces left!

[ There's no room for him. That hangs silently in the air, thick and tense. ]

Coming here was a mistake.

No, there's no together again for us. Not like how we used to be.

[even ven can't hope for something like that. they'd both changed too much to go back together neatly, two puzzle pieces warped and distorted by time.

he touches the spot that vanitas had stabbed with a finger, brows knitting together.]

If I can be healed then so can you, Vanitas. I'm not going to give up on you, not again.

[ventus fixes him with a hard look, determination behind his gaze. then, with some hesitation he holds a hand out palm up. he doesn't expect vanitas to take the offered hand, but ventus doesn't care.]

Even if... even if I need to sift myself apart again for you. I will.

...You're not going to break off your mended heart for me, Ventus. No one is going to let you do that.

[ Not for Vanitas. They'd tell him it's a bad idea. A waste of time. ]

And you should give up on me. I'm not your friend. Not one of your little guardians. I don't need your pity or your charity.

I don't care!

[ventus flares and takes hold of vanitas' wrist without thinking.]

If that's what it takes then- then that's what I'll do! I don't care what anyone else says! It's my heart!

[his voice starts to waver, a burning behind his eyes that he tries to blink away. between them stands chirithy, one paw reaching out to touch ven's leg.]

That's fine... it's fine if you aren't my friend. We're still connected and- and I won't give up on you.

[ Van's eyes go wide as Ventus takes his wrist. Where is this even coming from? What is that burning that he feels deep down in his own, tattered and dilapidated heart? ~~It's called hope not that he knows.~~ ]

I don't... Understand.

[ Right now he's just too stunned to get confused or mad. Or even war within himself. ]

[ven looks down to chirithy and quickly wipes away an errant tear with his free hand, blinking back the rest.]

I-... I'm sorry. Sorry.

[ Why is Ventus crying? What's he apologizing for? ]

What have you got to say sorry for?

[ He pulls his wrist free of Ven's grip. In the next second it's Vanitas that's pushing his thumbs up against Ven's cheeks. Wiping away the water. ]

If you're going to cry, I'll give you a reason to cry, idiot.

[ Like pinching his cheeks! ]

[because he's sad that all of this has happened? that they were separated to begin with and that vanitas is suffering because of it? that ventus doesn't have a good answer or solution on how to help him - yet?

he's still sniffing when vanitas pulls his hand away, expecting something like that to happen. what he doesn't expect is for van to wipe away his tears or-]

Ow! [he swats away van's hand when he pinches his cheeks, frowning at him.] I wasn't crying!

Ah huh... That's why my fingers are wet.

[ Van gonna lick it. ]

[ Like that's something big. World shaking. Or maybe it's because crying is a vague memory for Vanitas. One that he's tried to repress. ]

[he runs his thumb over his other cheek and wrinkles his nose.

then he bends down to pick up chirithy again who paps at his face too with a little paw.]

Sorry, Chirithy.

[ Speaking of the Spirit it's been weirdly silent. Now Vanitas just feels awkward standing there. ]

All tears are salty, Vanitas.

[don't make him even weirder, van.

chirithy has been quiet because it's important these two talk. they turn to look back to vanitas before holding their paws out for him.

take chirithy y/n?]

[ Awkwardly take Chirithy. Then look like he isn't sure what he's supposed to do with it.

The key to getting Vanitas to do anything right now is to not let him actually take too long to think about it. ]

[while vanitas might look awkward, chirithy seems pretty content in his arms.

ventus feels very tired all of a sudden now, but instead of letting it show he turns away to go pick up the mess vanitas made of the toaster oven.

he picks it up, turning it over as he examines the very large dent in its side. it's definitely broken.]
