Hello, fellow Moonblessed. If you'll oblige me with some of your time, I have a few questions about humans. That species is nonexistent where I hail from, so please forgive my curiosity, and I apologize in advance if any of these are rude. 1. Humans have no shells or carapace, and their clothing seems more decorative than protective. Am I correct in assuming that they use magic to defend themselves? 2. Do humans go through metamorphosis? I don't believe I have seen a human larva or grub here, though I admit I do not know how I would distinguish human young from an adult other than size. 3. Most humans that I have seen have hair primarily on their heads, rather than their whole body like, for example, a spider. Does that not make regulating their temperature more complicated? That will be all for now. Once again, I thank you for your assistance.

To speak plainly, it means that I am the vessel of a god of flame and rebirth. Naturally, that means my relationship to fire will be a bit different from a moth who does not carry that divinity within them.

the vessel versus a vessel seems like a distinction im mulling around with my one active brain cell not trying to overthink before asking
how many gods are there if theres affinities in your guys world?

There is a distinction between 'the' vessel and 'a' vessel. There are higher beings with multiple vessels, but mine only has me. Gods of my home... difficult to say. I have little interest in dealing with most of them, and many do not stray far from their kingdoms. To my count, there are six in Hallownest including the Nightmare King. And including the Void, which is questionably sentient, as gods go. Fire and wood. Light and darkness. Water, when there was water here, and the long-dead Wyrm, the god who made the kingdom.

It does take some getting used to. The difference between god and vessel can be... vague. The other gods are all extremely tiresome and I want as little to do with the rest as possible.

It would probably give you a headache, though I am willing to make an attempt at an explanation if you insist. Old and ancient gods are exactly as prone to petty disputes and grudges as mortals are, with unrelated mortals frequently ending up as collateral damage.

I can only speak with authority on my own experience, but vessels of the Nightmare King retain some individual identity. We are not completely separate from the god, and we carry our predecessors' memories, but we have our own personalities despite that. It can be difficult even for us to distinguish between the vessel and the Nightmare Heart. More or less, but picture an angry goddess of light saying, "You took my toys away from me and now I will bring a plague down on them just to spite you, specifically." Only she would most likely be speaking in capslock.

Vessels are born into their role. Unless you mean 'are gods forced to be tyrants', in which case no, they just usually end up that way.

For my sort of vessel, there is a Ritual to pass down the god to one's offspring, so that the Nightmare Heart continues to beat. I willingly accepted it as a child, and my child has chosen to partake now.

For vessels of the void, there is no choice. Their creator had no desire to give them one.

We have spoken of it at length. I would not ask this of them without them fully being aware of what it entailed and their own role in this.

Their creator was not the void. Wyrm had good intentions - if not good for the vessels - but it was still, as you say, a dick move.

They are not. I miss them dearly, but at least I know they were left in good care in my absence. Wyrm, also known as the Pale King. He once had a form similar to what you describe, but molted to take on a size and shape more similar to the bugs of Hallownest.

I am not terribly fond of Wyrm for a multitude of reasons, but I can at least find no fault in that molt. Mostly because withthout that I wouldn't have been witness to the God of Hallownest realizing that he probably should have included alcohol tolerance in his new body.
