I will not hide my identity nor pretend these words are not attached to me. There were men who thought I committed many wrongs before I came here. One man held me accountable and spared me nothing besides a lingering death, which leads me to my question: in your estimation, are there any crimes that are unforgivable?

What a common man or woman cannot - should not - do, a king or a queen can do for the good of their people, correct? Great sacrifices are expected in battle - in war - however do you think that a ruler's life should be forfeit for them? What good can they do if they are slain prematurely?

I can admit when I am wrong, but on this...

I don't understand.

I'm fairly sure this kind of thing is why most countries stopped having monarchs. Or at least, monarchs with actual power.

I'm obviously not the person who originally made this post, but this is a matter I'd wish to study more closely, being unfamiliar with such a world myself.

I've worried myself to death over the need for a worthy successor, you see.

The monarch of the country I'm from is a figurehead. Technically the head of state, but has no actual power.

It's an elected parliament which does the governing.

I apologize if our world sounds adorably provincial by your standards. Some of the gnomish city-states and islands over on the western seas were as you described, but the larger nations on our mainland were all led by a monarch.

Not really. Can't say that any system is immune to abuse. The government we have at the moment is terrible.

There's no such thing as a perfect system of government as long as actual people are involved.

Sad but true, I suppose. I've been drawn to the need for a suitable heir to be alleviated, but I must say that I doubt the best intentions of someone who actively covets the throne.

I can't speak for other worlds, but my own's history is rife with examples of why one shouldn't place too much stock in mortal judgment.

[personal profile] the_archivist 2019-10-08 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, considering anything immortal where I'm from is the servant of a terrible evil beyond human comprehension I'm not inclined to trust their judgement either.

Wise advice if I'd ever heard any.

Either way, the person to whom we're replying seems a piece of work.

I don't trust many people.

I've seen worse, honestly. At least they don't actually want to destroy the world.

Of course. I bet King Charles the First said that before he was executed.

A few countries still have monarchs. They're just figureheads for the most part.

I mean, the country went on to be the biggest empire in history spanning about a quarter of the globe without needing an absolute monarchy so...

But going back to the original question, if the monarch holds absolute power, how are they supposed to be held to account? You can't just vote for an opposition.

I'm sure there are plenty of areas of the world that are doing just fine and would prefer not to be ruled by someone else.

And sure, advice is good. But an absolute monarch doesn't have to take the advice. But the council can't really hold the monarch to account. They can't remove them from power if they're just terrible.

Because sometimes people are terrible and power hungry. Sometimes they stop seeing people as people and see them as... lesser.

So you support assassination as a method of regime change?

One person's justice. One person's idea of equality.

They should. But that's what happens when there's no way to bloodlessly removing the head of state.

Doesn't make you the best judge, the best person to be arbiter of all that is good and right. A bloodline doesn't magically bestow skill.

Having the luck of being born into wealth and a particular bloodline doesn't make you any more qualified.

If you gave any random person without a 'bloodline' and gave them the same wealth and opportunity, they'd probably do just as well. This is the kind of thing that keeps normal people from attending the best schools and universities.

I studied history too. Doesn't make me a good leader.

I'm sorry you had a hard time. But a fluke of birth doesn't give someone any more right to be in charge than anyone else. And there have been plenty of people with the strength to conquer who . have committed atrocities and been poor rulers.
