You can gain a lot of skills actually. Tactical awareness, strategy development, command power, survival skills... It just applies in a different environment - a virtual one, anyway.

Besides, last time I was pretty helpless. Nowadays, not so much. 👌

I already possess all those attributes from actual combat training. A video game is a controlled environment where characters and the environment behave a certain way. A real opponent is brash and unpredictable.

So wouldn't you say it's closer to a game of chess then? There is a fixed number of possibilities given the confines of the game, its rules, the pieces, and the participants. A real battle has an infinite number of possibilities and external interferences and no rules to follow.

Sort of, but not really at the same time. LmaO has a number of champions that, while yeah, they have the same kit of abilities to use, they can still all be played differently depending on a person's style. And while there are rules to follow, new strategies can be made all the time - even with the existing content.

Not to mention, the game itself isn't fixed. You have developers constantly updating how certain champions worked, adding new abilities, changing the meta by making some champions more viable than others, creating new maps, shifting their own rules -

The only real difference is no one dies, so I'll agree that the stakes are not inherently the same. It just isn't as simple as you think.
