There are treatments, but it still makes the risk of a severe secondary infection a lot worse.

The sterilization is probably because people would be much more hesitant even without taking into account the idea of raising a child on an alien planet. I know I personally wouldn't take the risk.

For people who do want kids eventually, all I can say is to hope that it's temporary and reverses itself when we leave.

Yes, but it can cycle. You can have it and it won’t flair up, and then flair up later. So just because you can’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there in some way.
