No, it's fine... When my father found me in the mountains, he said that my mother was so weak she couldn't say much besides my name and asking him to take care of me before she died. She was an armless, but she was alone, so... my father said she must have escaped from a lord's stable with someone else's help, but when something happened to them she couldn't take care of herself, or me. Maybe it was my father... ? I don't know, but I like to think so.

It's fine. I've had to explain it a lot since I came here- I don't expect people to just know like if it was my world.

Jinba used to be kept like horses, back during the wars. "Armless" is what they called the jinba who had their arms cut off to keep them obedient. That way, they had to rely on humans or they'd starve- like my birth mother did.

[Haru's quiet.

And then, Konoha will hear something in the soft-spoken, polite, proper young woman's voice that might be unexpected: Genuine anger.] That's horrible! How can anyone be so cruel?! You're not-- you're people, not--

[A breath. She cuts herself off.

When she speaks again, her tone is a little more measured, but still tense.] I can't imagine what that must've been like.

I'm glad things are better for you and your family now.

[In the face of (sort of) such anger, Konoha can only nod. It was horrible. It was cruel. But, even though it was...]

My boss always said that... people find it easy to do bad things to people who don’t look like them. It was the war, so... humans got desperate, I guess. It’s much better now.

[That’s what she clings to. It’s better now.]

And I was lucky, anyway. I don’t even remember it. My husband, and his friend... my boss... they’re the ones who have it harder.

People... can do cruel things to each other. I think that's been true as long as there have been people.

The important thing is that it does get better. Like-- like how we have a peaceful Japan, when I'm from. And-- and we're going to keep making it better.
