It is a method by which to power abilities, should they have been something an individual had prior to their arrival here. As to the matter of those brought here after what would have been their deaths... that I cannot speak to. It is possible that Chroma is to blame. However it is equally likely that it is not.

Does it not? I would consider the source to be what has granted an ability, which Chroma does not in this case. The abilities existed prior to arrival, thus Chroma cannot be said to be responsible.

That isn't the case for everyone though. I've spoken to people who claim to never have had any sorts of supernatural abilities before coming, meaning that something here is the source at least in those cases.

That is certainly another possibility.

With how abundant the crystals are and the fact that they seem to be used in lots of applications it seems possible. Of course it could be a combination of things too.

It's odd how this place seems fairly advanced but also gives us so few answers.

Indeed.  We may certainly guess at the answers, but it would appear that those in charge are not inclined to share.  Or perhaps they simply do not know the truth.
