I work for a federal agency. [ but maybe that’s too specific, too cryptic for someone whose world might not follow the same structures. ] For the government. Nothing too exciting—[ she lies ]-but if I’m not there to do it, I doubt the work would ever get done.

Women do, yes. Although, if you ask me, it’s not nearly enough.

[ she brushes off the compliment—not because she doesn’t want to accept it, as peggy does think she’s rather competent thank you very much—but because it’s simply not the thrust of the conversation. ]

It’s easy to feel outnumbered.

in i ‘s world, i think there is zero... unless perhaps can count shogun ‘s private woman.

Rather depends on one’s department. The secretarial pools are practically all women. Typists, too. But in other lines of governmental work, and in other capacities, there’s far far fewer. Back home, I was working out of a satellite office with only one other woman on roster.

[ that said, she’s convinced that rose could out-agent all the rest. given the opportunity. ]

What’s expected of a shogun’s private woman?

A secretary shouldn't be like a servant. But I'll admit that they're often treated as one.

[ —not that there's anything wrong with being a servant. one of her dearest friends happens to be her other dearest friend's butler. that said, that's not the life that secretaries signed up for. ]

And they most certainly aren't expected to give their employers children. I can't say we have positions...like those. In the government.

i think is most like government job for woman i can think... if come from poor family, family is most happy for daughter to be choose by shogun for OKU. i hear in story, can eat most good food and have fine clothes and be cared.

Filing, typing, managing calendars. Answering phones and fetching coffee. It’s not a bad life.

[ it’s just not her life, and she bristles when anyone at the agency behaves otherwise. ]

Just as I’m certain it’s not a bad life for some of the women who put themselves under a shogun’s care, like you’ve described. But I can’t believe it’s for everyone. I’d sooner take my chances elsewhere.

but that’s not konoha’s fault, and making this into a bigger conversation than it needs to be helps no one. so instead, with consideration: ]

farm is all people 's job! but i work on lumber yard in i 's world. other worker is all men, but i foreman because i jinba and know mountain well!

and i 's boss is much powerful woman. do many things woman not do.

People are often surprised by the jobs they can do, I think, if only given the chance.

if jobs is work, then yes! much jobs to be done, so will be very busy.

The feeling is quite mutual. I go a bit batty when there’s no work to be done.

[ which makes being here particularly difficult, as she can’t quite buy into the same institutions here that, on the surface, would seem like such a good fit. ]

But in both quarters—livelihood and chroma generation—there’s nothing more important than finding the right fit.
