hey everyone

i've got a question to ask that i'm a little shy about asking off anon
so, let's just say that you've had bad experiences with things that are supernatural back home.

like abilities, phenomena, things like that?

but you're here now.
magic is abundant here. a lot of people have powers and crap like that.

so what i'm wondering is that...

for those of you who have abilities: how would you feel if someone close to you, like a friend? had problems with your powers? how would you ease them into that sort of thing?
or if someone told you outright that they had problems with the supernatural, how would you help them?

unrelated to that, i do have another question.
i think i'm the only one explicitly from my world? but i think there are some people that are from a city or country similar to it, and i think it's really interesting that there's actually people like that.
but for someone who's kind of anti-social, it makes it hard to make friends wwww
is there anybody else here that's in that boat? i'm kind of curious.

well, you got two choices

either you don't tell them, and keeps things shallow so you don't get hurt. or you tell them and hope that person is a good enough friend to you that they're willing to overlook whatever the 'problem' is and stay in your life.

you'll find out who your true friends are real quick.

and what if they don't overlook it?

i'm not saying they're a bad person in this hypothetical
but like, let's just say they were burnt really bad in the past, multiple times, by someone w/ abilities and stuff like that

so it makes it difficult for them to trust someone who might have them
esp if it's like a dangerous in nature ability (i.e. violent, etc, you catch my drift)

like... if you told them and they said that
would they not be your friend anymore?

i'd just leave them alone. whether or not they think it's worth the risk to be around me is a choice they gotta make for themselves, and i don't think less of anyone for choosing to be safe.

odds are if you're someone with a violent or dangerous ability, you're already used to not having many friends

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure how'd I really deal with that. I don't exactly think of my powers as "supernatural", especially since anyone could actually learn how to use them.

But I guess I'd just try to... not bring it up or use them around them, if a friend was bothered by powers. I mean, that really seems to be the only thing I can think of doing.

... Well, I wouldn't say it's common either. Not many people know about it, there's just nothing about you that needs to be special for you to use it.

... But okay, yeah, if the person was in trouble and the only way that I could actually help them was to use my powers, then I'd have to go ahead and use them and just hope that they're less upset with that than whatever else was going to happen.

Where I'm from there is no such thing as the benevolent supernatural. Anyone would be quite correct in being wary, or outright hostile towards someone who displayed such abilities.

If I was told they had problems with the supernatural, I would be encouraging them to retain that suspicion and to try and get as far away from the source of the supernatural as they could.

It depends on the nature of the supernatural. And what people do with it. Some people are just... monsters at the core of them.

If they didn't 'get it,' I wouldn't bother to begin with, so it's a nonissue.

But in the hypothetical sense, it's not the responsibility of someone with 'abilities' to help other people be comfortable with it.

Me? I'd let them go. It's the people who don't have a problem with it who need their heads examined.

If I were just some run-of-the-mill mage... I'd probably tell them about my culture and lifestyle. Put the power in its context. Magic isn't an obscurity or aberration in a society of mages, and most who wield it don't experience it as a power that places them above anyone else, any more than a 20th century human from the developed countries would experience the ownership of a car as a transformational mastery of the people around them.

That did happen to me. Sort of. Not with someone close to me, but with a family member of someone who is. It didn't end well, and it didn't feel great, and I've been kind of overthinking the rest of my relationships with the other people who know about me ever since.

And now I'm wondering how different things would be, if the other people who knew about me could have had a choice in the matter. I guess an important question that decides something like that... is how much your powers affect people's entire lives, and if you have the ability to take it back if something bad happens.

But I didn't knowingly choose to have powers, so I'd ask them to be understanding, too.

I haven't really had anyone close to me have a problem with my powers, except that they get all worried and act like I'm going to get hurt or something because of how I use them.

I'm not really sure what I'd do if they were upset because they just didn't like the powers themselves.
